Am looking into this as a 56 year old with help from my 18 year old daughter who seems interested. What is the cm language abbreviations. Would love to know. I would like to help physically disabled childern, would you get referals from the council ect for this. Also I have a family friendly, small 8 year old dog. Would that limit potential clients. And how much can you earn before the tax man gobbles it up !! Would love a response to my questions, Plus, I like swimming, do parents happily pay for this, just for there child ect. Or would you get discounts from the council ect.

In what way? Do you have any experience with disabilities, any training? Do you have a house suitable to look after physically disabled children?

Do you know how to become registered and how long it takes to become registered, what training you need to do first and for you and your daughter and for both of you to have checks done, house checks done etc?

Have you done any market research as to whether there will be work for you in your area?

Have you approached the council about the need for specialised child minding?

How many children do you propose to 'mind' if you have your daughter assisting? Do you have the required space?

You are only allowed to take a certain number of kids swimming per adult and why would the council give you discounts?

You would need to work out what the local rates are and whether you would include the cost of swimming and other activities, meals etc in your fees or charge extra for them. You need to see what local childminders are offering for their fees to be competative.

Not being nosey your post just sounds like you had an idea and have not thought it through at all.

Your pre registration course from your local authority should answer some of your questions about tax, referral for children with additional needs etc. A dog may limit your clients, as some parents will not want their child in a house with a dog. Others will love it.

Parents may or may not want to pay for swimming. You will need risk assessments for the dog and swimming amongst other things.

Your first point of call should be your local authority to ask what support they offer new minders

I’ve never got a referral from the council and Ive been minding for over ten years now. There seems to be a trend to increase nurseries in school and to get as many children in to these nurseries as possible, so I wouldn’t expect referrals from the council tbh (as I’d expect them to be sign posted to the school nursery). I’m on the family information service website, which is run by the council, but this is more advertising than referrals iyswim.

Some families don’t mind pets, some run a mile when I mention I have a cat (the majority don’t, but I hear a lot more negativity about dogs at the childminders especially on mn).
The tax threshold is the same as in any job. I think it’s around 11k? Some income can be written off as expenses, so a % of gas/electric/water/council tax/rent. Also food for the children and the cost of their activities, petrol, groups you go to, toys and equipment you need to buy.

Parents want value for money and for some families the cost of childcare is a deciding factor to which setting they choose. So some wouldn’t mind paying for swimming, but others wouldn’t want to pay for a non essential. Also bare in mind that to make a profit/decent wage you might need to have all three of your places filled and you wouldn’t be able to take three children swimming. I can’t see the council giving you a discount for the swimming. They don’t give away very much nowadays. Childminders in my area used to get free first aid and safeguarding courses and be invited to other free trainings, but this has now all gone and we get nothing. They’ve stopped all but the bare essential communication and we seem to be left to our own devices now which often means we are floundering not knowing where the changes are or what ofsted are now expecting from us.
Registering can take quite a long time and in our area you will have to pay (I’m not sure, but I’m sure one new cm quoted £600 to do the initial start up courses). First aid costs anywhere betweeen £60 and £120 every three years, ofsted fee of £35 a year, insurance and Pacey membership is just under £100 annually, safeguarding has to be paid for as well as the cost of everything I do with the children, it’s hard to make minimum wage as the number of children I can care for is so limited.

Look into the demand in your area and maybe speak to your local council to find out what the start up costs in your area are.
I love my job and would recommend it as long as you are not expecting to make a fortune from it. It’s definite something people do for the love not the money!

I have been registered with the council as being available to take children with additional needs and have only had 2 children referred to me. I've had queries about a couple or others, but they never came.

Guess op isnt coming back then. Wonder why.
