Grrr!! Childminders

This is really just to rant. My DS has been at his childminders since November, and he has mostly enjoyed his time there. However in the (counts on fingers) 9 months (he wasn't there in January) he's been there she has text me 4 times to say "I can't have him today" - urgh! I'm so mad, my DH has had to take the day off because I've arranged a rare night away. FFS!!

Is it because she is sick?
Or does she give another reason?

HSMMaCM · 24/08/2017 20:35

Yes it really depends why.

I've taken 2 emergency days in 18 years. Had she been minding long? Do you know if this is unusual or not? She might just have had a run of bad luck with illness, or whatever.

I feel your pain bur it does depend on the reasons. Like @HSMMaCM I can count on one hand the number of days off I've had off in emergencies in over five years childminding so it so it does sound a lot and it might be worth looking elsewhere if you think it might continue. Out of interest do you pay her for these days?

Annoyed at the title of your post.......why are you ranting at all child minders?

When you selected your cm did you discuss with other parents if she was reliable and ask for references?

Why has she been off? Have others sent sick children to her spreading their bugs? Has she had a family emergency etc....all things that may not happen for years but can suddenly have a run as someone has said.

I had both my parents and in-laws dare do this to me once....my mum and mother in law where 4 months between with several false alarms before the actual deaths and then 2 years there we went again bye dad and father in law.

More recently I had cancer and rather than let people down I worked through chemo radiotherapy and operations with minimal time off (one pre booked holiday and 2 afternoons).
Generally we are a profession that sacrifices ourselves so that parents are not inconvenienced, but advice is normally to save a few emergency days for your child's or the cm's unforeseen illness/time off Everyone needs time sometimes have you never had a year when things happen and you actually take 4 or 5 days off work spread over several months?

jannier · 25/08/2017 14:52

Why shouldn't your DH take time off to cover illness just as much as you?

Ttbb · 25/08/2017 14:54

That's why they are cheaper than other childcare options.

Willow2017 · 25/08/2017 15:18

Your talking about 1 childminder not all, its a pretty goady post title.

What was the reason?
Does she have kids too, were they sick?
As pp said maybe someone sent a child in who vomited all over her and gave her norovirus or something?

If there is good reason 4 days in 9 months isnt really a lot.

Unless we know why she had to take time off how on earth can anyone say if it is reasonable or not? CM's are not immune to illness or family troubles, I often wonder why people think they are. I have seen so many posts on parenting sites questioning how dare Cm take any time off when they are supposed to be looking after their child and nothing else matters.

Its your Dh's child just as much as yours why cant he take time off to look after them?

As a single parent I have had to take time off for my kids, I dont charge for this time, I bend over backwards for my parents, and often my kids have taken a back seat (never again, its not appreciated) to accomodate work but at the end of the day if they are ill they come first, end of.

insancerre · 26/08/2017 06:59

Why wasn't he there in January?
Is there a back story?

chocolatemademefat · 17/09/2017 10:16

I think you should move your child to a nursery where I'm sure everything will be wonderful and you will be put before the health of the staff. Grrr indeed 😕
