Course Fees

Hi all,

I'm starting up childminding with my partner in Feb/Mar and I have just completed a Pediatric First Aid Course in Edinburgh. This was through Red Cross and cost £141.

Is there any way I can claim the fees back, the course being required for starting up the business?

Live in East Lothian.

Who would you be claiming from?

Probably best to talk to whoever is funding your costs and see what is included/excluded

All business startup costs that are 100% business can be put through your accounts as an expense. This reduces your profit, thus reducing your income tax liability.

Keep receipts.

Thanks, I emailed SCMA and Red Cross to see if they knew.

If it's done as an expense does it just go in the outgoings? If it reduces profit and thus tax is that good for me? If I do that is it recorded as part of the end of year tax return?

Have you covered doing business accounts yet in your pre-registration training? I am not sure how much it is covered but when starting any small business it is important to learn about doing accounts. I will find you a link to a good book about small business accounts.

HMRC Online Learning - Childminders

With all guides, they tend to be written for a certain tax year but the main content is still relevant today. You just need to refer to different figures for the tax thresholds.
