Sorry if this offends anyone but...... 'plump' nannies?

Is it just us or are nanny's generally 'plump'? (okay in this specific case I'm talking fat really, size 18+)

We have a new nanny, not started yet, but doing the odd half day alongside me to check that we all get along.

I just have concerns about her ability to deal with DS (active 22 month old) on a day to day basis. She finds it difficult to get up or down from the floor and I found I had to slow my pace massively when we went out to the park today.

I guess a part of me thinks that if she has a weight problem, does this reflect in her willpower/ self motivation in other areas?
Will she feed him decent food?
Will she take him to active sporty things (which he loves) or focus on sitting sitll crafty things (which he hates)

WHY DID YOU HIRE HER?

and why the point about nanny's (sic) being generally plump/fat? (and why spell nannies correctly in the title and wrongly in the post?)

And being slim doesn't mean that someone is fit and doesn't eat crap

Why assume that everyone objecting here is 'plus-size'

Anyway, you've hired her now so you're stuck aren'tcha?

off to practice what mercaroundthebend preaches as well

fwiw - if I was a small child, I know who I would prefer a hug from.... skinny boney sharp nanny or comfortable huggable soft nanny.

jampot · 12/02/2007 22:14

sunnyjim - Im thinking you should cut your cloth and stay off work and look after your own child.

Sunnyjim

Only supply your nanny with dust to eat.

Marjorie Dawes swears by it

Remember - DUST

fireflyfairy2 · 12/02/2007 22:20

Can I ask something totally irrelevant here? what does (sic) mean? Does it mean spelled incorrectly? Or have I got it wrong???

Mercy · 12/02/2007 22:21

sic =thus

as in a direct quote

MegaLegs · 12/02/2007 22:22

I think I'm most offended by the title. .....'plump' nannies. I imagine it said with a smug, little conspiratorial (made up word??) giggle.

colditz · 12/02/2007 22:22

Dust? Anyone?

No?

fryalot · 12/02/2007 22:22

sic = spelling/typo/grammatical error is not mine, but is the mistake of the quotee

Nightynight · 12/02/2007 22:23

hmm
this is a topical thread for me.
I just had a temp nanny for 2 days, she was crap and also hugely overweight. She did have food issues that affected her ability to do her job. Eg, she only let my 3 yr old dd have 1 piece of toast for her tea (dd is used to stuffing her face until she is full), and I felt that nanny was taking out her own food issues on dd.

I also had an overweight nanny in the past, who put it into dd1's head that she (dd1) was fat, and needed to lose weight. dd1 was 7 and skinny at the time!!!

It wont stop me from hiring an overweight nanny in the future, as there are many apparently perfectly well balanced overweight ladies on MN. So the answer to the OP is, yes, it would put me off a bit, because I would fear personality issues, but it isnt the most important factor. Its probably just the most visible.

this line is to demonstrate to ds how to do faces:

fireflyfairy2 · 12/02/2007 22:24

Ta Mercy

Are you scared your son would rather seek comfort in your nannies ample bosom than your razor sharp ribs?

Sorry... that was cheeky... but no cheekier than your assumption that fat people think of nothing other than food!

ludaloo · 12/02/2007 22:24

This must be a wind up...either that or a big mistake...It offends just about everyone of any size or shape!

Unless you are a 12/14 apparently!

colditz · 12/02/2007 22:26

Nightynight that was so random it made me laugh

fireflyfairy2 · 12/02/2007 22:26

Nighty night. My sister is a size 8. Her 2 boys have the biggest hang up re: food I have ever seen in my life!! In fact, at aged 6 & 4 they have never sat down to a cooked meal as my sis doesn't do meals. They have scones, pasta.... sausages with the skin peeled off them

QueenEagle · 12/02/2007 22:26

Gosh, if that's the case I had better look for an alternative childminder to the "plump" one I have chosen becasue her being overweight will be so detrimental to my kids' wellbeing and far outweigh the benefits that her "outstanding" (according to Ofsted) care will provide.

MegaLegs · 12/02/2007 22:26

How could a nanny take out her food issues on your DD in just 2 days. Why not tell her your dd enjoys more toast.

I was a nanny many moons ago and meals were never a problem as I just followed the parents instructions about what/how much to feed them.

Ta Squonk as well, I had been wondering that for ages... & thought I should ask

Nightynight · 12/02/2007 22:27

note to self: never hire a size 8 nanny in case she cant cook

[joke]

ludaloo · 12/02/2007 22:28

BigHotMama · 12/02/2007 22:28

How rude?

How old are you sunnyjim? Need to get a grip on REAL LIFE!

MegaLegs · 12/02/2007 22:29

I really don't understand this food issue. Does the nanny do all the food shoppping and cooking too? I just used to cook whatever the parents asked me to do that day.

Nightynight · 12/02/2007 22:30

jo, I know they can, but Ive only ever experienced the overweight ones.

megalegs, I didnt give her line by line instructions, but I did tell her that the children eat what they like, unless its just before a meal. When I got home, I was met by hungry dd and nanny saying accusingly that "dd2 only fancies sweet things". Nanny definitely had issues, but I dont want her issues around my children.

Stiller · 12/02/2007 22:32

I know the OP sounds judgemental and crass but I think a lot of parents make assumptions based on weight/appearance when interviewing for a nanny.
