wondering what other childminders do when they practice their fire-drills. i just tell the children where the imaginary fire is and then while they are playing i press the smoke alarm. they all go to the nearest door and stand outside. is that ok? what does everyone else do? i also log it everytime we have one.

Pretty similar really.
Press the smoke alarm when no-one looking, tell them what it means, everyone should stop what they are doing and stand still for me to come to them, tell them if fire was in kitchen we go out front door and visa versa etc. I log it too to show we have done them and name children present.

I think the main thing is to let children know to keep calm, stop what they are doing and not to run about.

My smoke alarm goes off every time I make tea so kids are used to noise by now. I get them to sit on floor facing the door holding hands and shout fire fire together. If they do this by the time I look, they get a yoghurt raisin or choc button. Getting them to sit on floor allows the smoke to go over their heads and by holding hands they reassure each other
