What do to in London in summer holidays that isn't too packed

Hi,
I am nannying for a ten year old boy during the holidays and most of the days we will need to be out of the house, so need to go places.

I want to do fun things in London, but don't want to go anywhere too obvious that means a massive queue (the main museums) and nothing too expensive.

I was thinking parks and maybe smaller museums so far.

What area of London?
In S London you have the Hornimann Museum that also has a good petting zoo / animal park in the gardens, Crystal Palace with a maze, dinosaurs, Sydenham Woods: natural woodland. Dulwich Park has rowing boats and pedaloes for hire, and also go-kart type bikes.

The Queen Elizabeth Park has climbing walls and good climbing structures.

Museum of London, and Docklands Museum is often less crowded than the big museums.

Check out Unicorn Theatre at London Bridge.

Or just get a map of the Underground and every day tick off another station. (might get repetitive).

Is there anything near Earls Court tube?

Greenwich has park, observatory, maritime museum, cutty sark, riverside walk. You can get a riverboat there from central London. Museum of docklands is also good.

Take buses to a different part of London each day, have walk and ice cream, come home again?

As he's ten, can you give him maps and guide books and ask him to plan itineraries, or at least make suggestions?

Does he like Harry Potter? We spent a day up in London going round to different sites that had been used in filming the Harry Potter movies.

If he has a lot of interests, how about a trip to one of the really big bookshops - Foyle's, or Waterstone's in Gower Street? Forbidden Planet in Shaftesbury Ave and British Museum are nearby. You could spend a day between all of those.

If you go to King's Cross for Platform 9 3/4, the British Library is nearby. There's always at least one free exhibition. Also near King's X is the new Granary Square development, nature park, canal museum, canal walks.

There is loads at Greenwich. The Maritime Museum, walk up the hill to the Astronomy museum and observatory, it is a nice park, might still have a boating lake.

Has he got a bike and have you got transport? Richmond Park is a great place to cycle.

From Earls Court nip down to Wimbledon for the iMax Odeon on a rainy day. Cheaper than 'in town '.

Has he got a skateboard? Look up all the parks with a skatepark and go often. They are friendly sociable places and kids make mates.
