Do I need to get a police check for an au pair?

Hello! I am about to hire a lovely Spanish girl as our au pair. Does anyone know if I am supposed to get a CRB check? I met a girl who said she gets police checks and health checks on her au pairs. I'm not sure I know what a health check is? Can anyone advise?

Health check?? That sound like crossing a line to me.

Police check seems OK to ask to me. She is going to be in charge/around the kids and might have to drive them to school.

A DBS check would be pointless on someone new to the UK. You could ask them to bring something from their home country but would you be able to read it (can you read Spanish - would you need them to get a certified translation)?

Overseas Checks

Health Check - would an aupair willingly go to a GP for a private medial check paid for by their host family? I'm not sure they would and I am not sure what information the GP would pass on to you other than they are fit to work.

Could you not try to establish things like their fitness to work by talking to references?
