Au pair holidays - do they choose all or is the choice split?

We've had nannys until now and this was on the basis that we chose half the days and they chose half. Can anyone tell me what is the norm with Au Pairs?

One of the conditions we apply is that they can only take holidays during the school holidays. We do advise them of that at the beginning - if they want to work during the school holidays (but less childcare) that's fine, but if they want to travel, go home etc, they need to arrange things during the school holidays.

We do the same, although this works for us because DH is a teacher. If you can work from home or have other options for after school care (assuming you have school aged children) you may not necessarily need/want to do this.

We let them choose as long as they give us notice of when. But they are aware we prefer them to take it in the school holidays so sort of muddle along a bit. It has worked ok!

School holidays only for us. I give them the dates before we sign the contract. Ours only work 4 days p/w though so can do long weekends all year round.
