Describe (in as much detail as you care to!) a typical day for you as a nanny or childminder (please specify which)

HSMMaCM · 21/05/2014 18:56

Not really a typical day for me (CM).

Some days - toddlers morning, home for lunch, naps and garden play in the afternoon.
Other days - out to the forest. Picnic. Naps in pushchairs.
Different day - out to museum or whatever, lunch in a cafe or picnic, home when we've finished.

No real rigid routine.

I am a nanny. If I work 8-6 [a typical day]

8am I arrive - chat with Mum or Dad and greet the baby - we have breakfast and then a nap [this may be in the cot or if have plans in the pram]
9am Walk into town with the pram maybe run some errands [post office etc] OR if at home put on a wash, hang out the washing, boil up some veg for food later on.
10am Group time - attend a group session maybe rhyme time/baby and me etc
11am Walk home and baby plays while I prepare lunch
12pm Lunch time - sit and eat with the baby
12.30 Nap time - Baby has a sleep of upto 2 hours and I do nursery duties ie ironing, batch cooking, tidying, going through the diary to see what i need to be aware of ie grannys birthday
230 Baby up and we do some arts and crafts [painting] or head out for a walk, we might also meet up with friends.
5pm Tea time
5.45 Tidy up and hand over with parent
6pm Goodbye

  • Different variations may include playdates, having naps in prams as out and about, having people over etc

I'm a nanny. Typical day 7-7.

7am - Get children up, dressed, teeth brushed, hair done.

7.30 - Breakfast for big one, milk for baby.

8am - breakfast clean up. Clean up any dishes etc left from night before too. Stick a wash in the washing machine.

8.15 - fold up any dry washing still hung up and leave for ironing later. Play with kids. Generally potter at same time. Check fridge for what's available for lunch/tea.

9am - pack nappy bag and get children ready for morning activity. Normally a toddler group or something similar. Spend a few hours there.

11.30am - come home, get lunch ready.

12pm - lunch for all of us.

12.30 - clear up empty plates. Play with kids.

1pm - nap time. Hang clean washing up/out. Iron dry washing from earlier. Clean anything else that needs doing if kids still asleep.

3pm - activity at home like crafts or messy play, or walk if weather is nice.

4.30pm - get tea ready

5pm - all sit down for tea.

5.30 - clear up after tea, get bed time bottles ready.

5.45 - start getting pjs etc ready. Run bath. Plonk kiddies in! Wash, teeth brushed, pjs on. Stories, cuddles, bottles ready for 6.30/7pm bedtime.

Clear up any mayhem still left over from tea time. Have a cup of tea. Job done! :)

Why are ye asking?

Pistachio14 · 21/05/2014 20:12

I'm curious about the variety of activities and structure that are involved in a nanny or childminder's day

It's interesting to read!

I'm a nanny. One charge 8 months. Work 8-6:30/7:30.

8am - quick chat with mum and dad about how he slept and how much milk he had at 7:30. Parents leave and we play/I put on his laundry on a Monday and Thursday.

8:30 - breakfast. Then I tidy up breakfast stuff and empty the dish washer.

9:30 - charge naps for 30 minutes either in cot or in pram if we are going to a class.

10:30 - baby gym/music/toddlers/swimming (I only work 4 days)

12:15 - lunch time.

1pm - charge goes for a nap for 2 hours. I have lunch, do his ironing, batch cook for the freezer, darn any clothes, check fridge/cupboards for bosses dinner and prep (only once or twice a week and nothing fancy!) some days have 2 hours to myself, but not often!

3pm -wake charge and give him a bottle.

3:30 - out for a walk or shops or meet friends or play at home, crafts or toys and in a few months, baking. Occasionally have a swim.

5pm - charge naps in the pram, either on the way home or we go out for a walk. But he's pretty close to dropping this sleep now.

5:30 - charge has tea and then I do a general clean of our areas, wash up, sweep, tidy away toys, clothes.

6:30 - finish or on a late, take charge up for a bath.

7pm - bottle, book and bed

7:30 - finish.

FlyntCoal · 21/05/2014 22:17

Nanny, 7.30 to 7 (in theory!)

7.30 arrive, grab all school items for three eldest and put in car. Help finish breakfast and getting ready. Wrangle kids into car.

8 leave for school. Drop teen at school, then take next two (aged three and six) into school.

8.30 take toddler home, drop off car, put on wash, clean up breakfast things.

9 go out to park, playgroup, singing groups, or to meet nannies with similar aged charges.

11.30-12, arrive home, do lunch, get toddler down for nap for 12.30, 1

Naptime- do laundry, ironing, change beds, empty dishwasher, mop kitchen, sew, grab lunch, prepare the tea.

2.30 leave to get kids, 3 year old finishes at 3, 6 year old at 3.40 so lots of hanging round the playground! Two days a week I pick up both at five so I take toddler to park first. Other days take all three to park after school.

5, home, sort out tea while six year old does homework and three year old and toddler play. 10 mins tv wind down time. 5.30 eat. At some point teen wonders in, eats with others if on time but lots of extra-curricula sports so not often. I save her food if not home. Send her to do homework.

6.15 bathe three youngest, pjs, story.

Usually 7 ish get a text boss is running late, if so I put two youngest to bed. If they are later than 8.30 I put six year old to bed, but she won't sleep til they're home.

If still there at 9.30 (1 or 2 times a week) tell teen to wind down and get ready for bed, she gets to bed for 10 usually. I don't do homework or anything with her.

Wait! Home some days at 7.30, usually more like 8.30, occasionally up to midnight. Once 2am. Luckily on a Friday.

And I still get moaned at if I'm a minute late in morning! I also do two weekend days a month.

Mug. Love the kids though.

Childminder currently caring for after school children and also some of the school holidays.

After school
3pm :start collecting children
3:20/:30 back home for snacks - we chat about our day in school and anything else the children wish too
I always have a planned craft activity but the children sometimes wish to do sometime else, so plans can change quickly.
Dressing up, free play, tent/den up in playroom etc

Hand over to the parents
Clean up activities and toys

School Holidays( no 2 days are the same)

Just before the holidays, I make a list of ideas and go through these, also asking the children for their suggestions on what they would like to do over the holidays.

if we have a planned day out

Pack our going out bag(first aid box, childrens information packs etc) and if having picnic, this is made up ready before children are due

children arrive, quick chat with parents to see if there is anything I need to know.
Little one plays whilst I finish packing picnic
Catch train/bus to venue
Lunch picnic or sometimes we eat out at a cafe

if we get back with time to spare, we then play, craft etc or if the children are tired sometimes we watch a dvd/read.

Hand over to the parents
Clean up activities and toys

if we are staying local

Children dropped off -chat with parents
play , craft or bake
morning snack
visit to library for story time/craft , park, Castle, feed ducks, meet up with another childminder and their children , walk the dog etc
back for lunch/picnic or go to a cafe
play, craft, decorate cakes etc
if we did not go out in the morning then we go to the park or out for a walk, play out back yard
more play, craft etc
afternoon snack
more play

Hand over to the parents
Clean up activities and toys

PhoebeMcPeePee · 23/05/2014 00:06

Childminder here:
7:30-8am children arrive
8am breakfast
8:30 get ready for school run
9:15 home, free play (lego, cars, dolls etc)
10am usually out for activity (toddler group, park, library, playcentre etc) take snack to eat there but sometimes (1 or 2 days a week) stay home for organised activity such as craft session, sensory play etc
11:30/12 home free play whilst I organise lunch
12:15/30 lunch
1-2:30 naps then stories or quiet activities eg puzzles, fuzzy felt etc
3-3:45pm school run. Play in the park if it's nice & again take snacks with me otherwise home for crafts/free play
5pm tea time
5:30 free play or tv on a Friday!
6pm pick up time

I'm not a big one for organised games & activities but like to see what children are interested in that day - one day we might build a den under the table & have a tea party, another a nursery rhyme/music session but it can also just be the kids playing with toys I put out & I dip in & out depending in how it's going!
