Warning - re DBS checks

I have just had a new DBS check done. I called to enquire once the tracking system had shown it as "printing certificate" for a couple of weeks, and was told to leave things another week, at which point DBS would consider it lost in the post and send me another (which they have, but it has taken another two weeks!). The explanatory blurb on their website says you can register for a small fee during the two weeks following receipt of your certificate to have your DBS check details held on their database so a new employer can refer to this and save having to have a new check done. Well as soon as I got my certificate I immediately tried to do this on the website and got only an unintelligible error message. I phoned DBS office and was told it should work and to try again later in the day - still no luck. I phoned again and was told that although I had only just received my certificate, the two weeks limit applied from when I should have had the original lost one. I have tried long and hard to argue with this (pointing out that there is nothing on the tracking system to indicate how long printing might take or if/when the certificate is posted)and have been completely stonewalled - their attitude is tough, you will have to request a new check. So if you or your employer requests a check, and you want it to be registered for future reference, do keep checking. I'd suggest chasing up regularly as soon as the tracking system says it is printing.

Does seem silly only get 2 weeks to register - luckily my agency warned me this so did it - but sure many people have been caught out - esp if had problems getting certificate in first place

Tho I got email confirming with link and then certificate came in post - it's the only one you get so keep in safe place

Unlike new one you would get each time you renewed crb/DBS

Yes, same thing happened to me. I'm need to have a DBS auto update for work, but the NHS contracts woman only informed me of this fact 2 weeks and 3 days after the certificate was issued and now i have to make another 2.5 hour round journey (with DD in tow) to get a new one...........I'm usually really good about little things not irritating me but this has REALLY, REALLY annoyed me...........I could rant on for ages.

I wish I had realised this too, I didn't register mine.
