Nanny Share

Hello

We are having issues with our au pair and so are now considering having a nanny share instead.

We would be looking for someone 8am until 6pm approx for an 18 month old boy and then collection at 1.30pm from nursery until 6pm for a 3 year old girl. Both lovely children but we have quite strict boundaries. The difficulty is that while we would definitely need someone 3 days a week those days would change on a weekly basis (due to my work) and it very possible that more days would be required frequently, so some weeks we would require 5 days a week.

We have no preference or concern as to which house they are looked after in and wouldn't require any housework, would be flexible around most things to do with the other family, to be honest it is about finding the right nanny and family to share with. Ideally would like the nanny to be looking after other families child and our DS at the same time for socialisation.

Do you think this could work as a nanny share and how much should we be looking to pay (Guildford)?

Ow and does anyone know where I could find other families that might want to do a nanny share?

I no longer have young children but, reading your post, it seems as though you need a flexible nanny just for your family.

I think the nanny would struggle to work around another family's timetable as well, especially if you frequently require extra days.

I feel you are wanting too much flexibility for it to work as a nannyshare or having your own. Who wants to have a job where they don't know how much they would earn?

If you were to pay a fixed agreed amount per month, then that might work. If working days are as a rota, known well in advance, then that might work. But not knowing when they would be needed to work I can't see appealing to many people.

Can you fix the days?

Do the working hours fit with what a childminder offers? Maybe a childminder might be able to offer flexible places, though even they will want some advance notice I would have thought.

Can you explain more about the 3 day, 5 day thing, such as how far in advance that is known?

Some agencies will help fix up a nanny share. However if you are quite strict on boundaries I'd suggest you try to find a family with similar values yourself . Have you tried your local NCT group for mums about to go back to work?

As others have said, the job needs to work for the nanny in terms of earning a regular salary as well as for you. Maybe a SAHM who needs a bit of a break every now and again would work as a anny share partner? Or someone who only works two days a week so there is a limit to the number of days when nanny has all the children to look after.

You might need to double up on stuff - high chairs, double buggies - when we did a nanny share it was always at the same house so that we didn't spend ages transporting equipment from house to house.

I would of course guarentee a minimum number of days/hours a week and it is likely they would earn more. Equally there would be some weeks where we would pay them the fixed amount but they wouldnt be required so would, in effect, be paid for not working, this is fine by us as it is a bonus for them being flexible Often I know a few weeks in advance what I am working but other times I will get a call the night before (not ideal for anyone).

I think you are right that I may need to look at a nanny just for our family or maybe one who has their own child.

Sounds like a childminder might be a good option if you can give her the hours well in advance. Then the socialisation part is taken care of too.

Oh sorry just saw that you'd said the night before you get calls to go to work.
