Caring for relative

Hello, if anyone could advise me I'd be very grateful.
I'm currently looking after my niece in my home, and get paid £80 per week to do this whilst I'm already at home with my youngest child.
My worry is that my marriage isn't going great, and I'm just wondering what happens if I end up a lone parent?
Obviously I would need to apply for some benefit help, but I'd like to avoid claiming income support as I'm actually earning the £80!!
What would I have to do? Would the benefits office accept that I provide care or would they expect me to find a job? Would we have to go through hmrc as employee and employer??
Sorry for so many questions but can't find the specific info on the internet!
Thanks in advance :)
