Nanny CRB check - how long does it take?

Spoke to my local (London) SureStart Approval centre today. Woman told me it usually takes 4 - 6 weeks to get a CRB check done for nanny.

But, this contradicts what they told a friend last week, - that it takes about 10 weeks!

Which is correct?

I have been CRB checked twice and it is pretty random - kind of like waiting for a passport to be processed.

You can ring the CRB and see what their average process time is right now.

i've known 3 weeks and... sorry to say.... 9 months!

most are normally a matter of a few weeks in my experience.

I Hate to say this, but at the moment they are taking about 10 weeks! I was talking to a lecturer from a local college whose students I have on placement & there welcome day for next years students is tomorrow, they ask that all of them fill in CRB forms tomorrow so that they have them in place for the end of September so that the students can start going out on placements (childcare courses). It is invariably longer at this time of year because of teachers changing schools etc & therefore more work to be done & fewr staff because of holidays lol.

I had an Enhanced CRB check done in May, it took 2 weeks.

There are many factors that can affect how long it will take for a check to be done, one factor which adds significant delay is if the person has not lived in the same place for the past 5 years. This is due to the previous addresses needing to be checked. Therefore, I'd say that for each address in the past 5 years, including the current address, apply the timescale of 2 weeks, so... if lived at 2 addresses, it may take 4 weeks, 3 addresses 6 weeks etc.
If any address is not in the UK, then the wait could be a very long time indeed.

I've had CRB checks done for about the past 3, may be 4 years, and every time it's taken 2 weeks - but note, I've not moved house.

Will be interesting to see how long you find it takes - do report back. May be interesting to include how many addresses were given, to see if my theory of 2 weeks per address is about right, or not.

Nanny has recent police check from Auz, and has only lived at 1 address since landing in the UK a few months ago, so we shall see.

it depends how big the que is.... nanny CRB checks take as long as any otehr enhanced CRB (teachers / Drs etc) ANYTHING from a couple of weeks (my record is 20 days!) to months and months

(remember all the palava a few years back when the teachers needed them and many couldnt go back to their teaching jobs cause their CRB check hadnt cleared?)

CRB say that they do 85% of all enhanced checks within 4 weeks. We will see..................

Was just wondering this myself - nanny's CRB was sent off 4 weeks ago today - I phoned last week to find out how long it was taking at the moment and was told 8 weeks, I rang today (to ask whether I would get something from them when it was through , or if they just sent it to the nanny) and was told it takes 4-6 weeks.
Our nanny was CRB checked for her last job, and I had heard a rumour that it was quicker if you've had it done before, but we're still waiting (and amassing ridiculous amounts of childcare vouchers which can't be cashed until she's approved).
Anyone else seen the bit on the childcare approval scheme website where it says 'if you are re-applying for approval (as you have to do each year) please allow 16 weeks after submitting your forms', so 4 months before it runs out, you need to set it all off again!

Let us know when it comes through.

I'm now getting stressed as nanny uses 2 different addresses - the one she pays council tax on (and so I assume the one where she is on the electoral roll) which she is selling, and her mum's house, which she is moving to. I think she put her mum's address on the original CAS form, since we didn't know how long the process would take. I'm now scared that, since she lives elsewhere at the moment, there might be problems getting her CRB done.

Have you spoken to the CRB people to find out what the hold-up is? Sorry - you can't ring, but nanny can.

I have chased them up about 10 times as has she. Cannot get any sense out of anyone. The even stranger thing is I am 100% sure there is nopthing wrong and she has already got an up to date notmal CRB check - its just the enhanced one that seems to be taking time.It's driving me nuts.....

Did you ring the Childcare Approval Scheme or the actual CRB people? - Is it possible to ring the CRB? - I've been looking at their website and it says that it gets 90% of enhanced checks done in 4 weeks - why do I only hear of ones that take longer?
According to the website, they do the basic check, but the local police have to do the 'enhanced' bit - and so this bit is out of 'their' control and takes longer (depending on how busy the police are)
Dh is wanting to stop getting childcare vouchers but I don't want to lose the tax saving, s'all getting a bit stressful!

I spoke to the CRB to check their turnaround-time. They quoted me 85% within 4 weeks. They said hold-ups were usually due to multiple addresses being checked, thus the fewer addresses the less likely it is to be subject to a delay?

Don't know if that is true, but that is what CRB people said.

We've got the CRB disclosure ! Hurrah - it was 6 weeks and 5 days from the 'interview'... and now we are waiting for the CAS to give nanny her 'approved' status..
(I have rung the CAS 3 times over the last 3 weeks but they just told me that they had no way of speeding up the CRB check)

15 weeks and counting....apparently its all to do with the backlog at the local police station.......

Bluebear - let us know how long it takes to get approved registration number. Once she has this can you just give her the vouchers, or does she have to register with them too?

GoldenOldie - once she has her reg number she has to register with the voucher companies as well (dh and I get vouchers from accor and busy bees so it's twice as complicated) - I think with accor you can send your application along with your first lot of vouchers..I've already printed out the application for her..just waiting for the magic number..We are going to give her this next month's pay in vouchers as soon as she gets her number as we don't know how long it will take between sending them off and the money appearing in her account.

Our nanny received her reg number at last - it's taken 7.5 weeks from the 'interview' with the CAS (and about 5 months since we employed her eek). She has just filled in her Accor form and sent off the first lot of vouchers so we'll see how long it takes for them to be credited (not due in her account until 31st Aug so she shouldn't end up out of pocket)
Now to work out how to use the Busy Bees ones.

Bluebear - thanks for the info. Will post when our nanny gets hers - will be a month since her interview next week.

CRB check arrived back on 4 August - less than a month (she had interview on 14 July).

Now we just need to get her registered to take the Accor vouchers.................
