SMP for Nanny

i'm about to employ my second Nanny. May I ask a question about SMP...am just making sure I have a good knowledge.

Am I right in thinking that being a small employer, earning 27000 per year, I would be able to claim back 100 % SMP paid to a Nanny from the government?

Yes. In fact it's 103% to cover ni contributions too.

Inland revenue are v helpful. They even pay you in advance

SMP Recovery, Advance Funding - yep, 103%

Oh fantastic. That's what I thought. Prospective new Nanny mentioned at interview that she would like to start a family and I wanted to make sure that I knew exactly what SMP would entail.

Thanks for your replies, both of you.

One thing to keep in mind, whilst on maternity leave they build up holiday entitlement. So factor that into any cost calculations, as that cost will come from you not Government.

Ooh good point Cindy, I had read that but obviously not absorbed it. Jeez, that would be a lot of money. Yes, will factor that in to my calculations.

Can anyone suggest anything else I may have overlooked? Nanny is not pregnant, but I obviously want to know what my financial responsibilities are should this arise.

You will need to do a risk assessment as well.

tbh im surprised the nanny told you - legally you cant ask her if she is going to start a family soon and it may take her years to concieve so other employers may have ruled her out for her honesty

but very nice of you to think things over for her/you :)
