Childcare question

I'll be going on maternity leave with number 2 soon. When I initially go back to work both children can go to the nursery my son is already at. However my son will be starting school soon after and I've no idea how people manage this. I really like the nursery so happy to keep the youngest there but my work means I cannot drop son off/pick him up from school.

So after that ramble...

  1. Any ideas how people manage the nursery run plus an hour or two childcare after school until I get back from work. This would be 3 days a week.
  2. How do people manage holidays?

Thanks!

Childminder for school aged child. However you then have two drop off points, two pick up points, so some people will use childminder for care of youngest child as well.

Co-ordinate your holiday from work with when your childcare is unavailable.

Childminders can provide care during school holidays though will probably take some time off themselves, so you co-ordinate your holiday with that.

Either childminder, breakfast/afterschool club or au pair for before/after school.

Or take the youngest one out of the nursery and get a nanny who can look after both.

I'm doing a combination of:

  1. rota with a friend whose child is at sane school
  2. after school club
  3. working a shorter day from home This covers my 3 working days. Not started it yet though so who knows if it will work?

I was on maternity leave for 1st year with older children so we didnt have this logistial nightmare

I also work 3 days. I brought working day forward so i start very early, H does drop off (at nursery then school). He gets to work about 9.30 and therefore stays late most evenings. School has after school club, so children go there 2 days and I pick up there at 5.30 thengo on to collect little 1 from nursery. H collects from schhol and nursery on 3rd day.

School hols - if you work 3 days, presumably stretch your leave between you (I.e my H only has to take 3 days holiday to cover a whole week as I'm off the other 2 days) so you can cover most of the school hols between you. Does mean in our case that we rarely take holidays together (1 week this year). We havevgrandparent help for 2 weeks in the summer hols and at Christmas.
