What time do you wake up?

I was chatting to a friend and she was surprised that I get up so early. Is it unusual for a nanny to be up early enough to listen to farming today whilst trying to have something to eat?

I have to leave home by 6:20 so alarm goes off at 5:30 so I can have a slow start to the day - well that 50 mins seems to go by quickly, enough time for a Brew and cereal.

Am I unusual starting work 6:45am (work is about 30min drive)?

I'm a Maternity Nurse and wake up what ever time baby charge wakes up. Last night was in bed just before midnight and 4 week old baby woke at 4am, had some milk (back in bed by 4.30am) and then woke again at 7.20am.

4am, oh not nice time of the day. Though to be expected when maternity nursing.

I get up at 5.45, leave the house at 6.45, work 20 minutes away

(apart from last Friday and this bloody next two day, travel the 303, Solstice and Glastonbury will add to the journey)

I think that people forget, that for a child carer, whatever time 'normal' people start work, we have to be there earlier to allow them to leave.

When I was a nanny, I would wake up when the mum left for work (7 am) and I'd open the door to my room so I could hear when the child woke up (normally about 8-9am).

HSMMaCM · 27/06/2013 08:23

Normally up at 7 for an 8am start, but occasionally earlier starts are requested (ie parent has a meeting somewhere miles away from their office). If I advertised a 7am start, loads of working parents would love it.

Wickedgirl · 27/06/2013 10:55

I get up at 6and leave the house for 6.50 for a 7.45 start. I get home at 7pm absolutely shattered

lechatnoir · 27/06/2013 13:11

I get up at 7:15 for a 8:30 start Smile

lechatnoir · 27/06/2013 13:11

7:30 start (wishful thinking 8:30Wink)

Reinette · 27/06/2013 21:21

I normally begin at 7:45a and so am up at 6:30/7. Occasionally they'll request an earlier start, but thankfully that's rare.

ChippingInWiredOnCoffee · 27/06/2013 21:26

I wouldn't do it that way - I'm much more of a up/shower/out kind of person - but each to their own :)

I'm usually up at 6.

grabaspoon · 27/06/2013 21:50

If my boss is here I start work at 7.15 am so up at 7.10 and get dressed - breakfast and cuppa when I start work.

When my boss is away we [Charges included] get up at 7.30 and have shower/breakfast.

Either way we're ready for the day at 8am and out the door at 8.30.

nannynick · 27/06/2013 22:00

Alarm went off at 5.35am this morning, so yep in time for Farming Today. Have got to quite like listening to that whilst deciding if I can drag my feet out of bed to make a cuppa.

As a live-out nanny I have about a 20-25 min journey to work and start at 7, so typically leave shortly after 6.30. Takes me a while to get moving in the morning, seems worse in winter when you get home in the dark and leave for work in the dark. Not so bad this time of year, though can be cold in the morning.

drinkyourmilk · 28/06/2013 06:32

I start at 715. Up at 545. It's heart all the way here. Can't say I've even heard of farming today!

nannynick · 28/06/2013 11:42

Its on radio4, quite interesting sometimes, informative about latest developments in farming. Probably a station which older people listen to, though shouldn't generalise.

nannynicnic · 28/06/2013 20:42

I start at around 7.30/7.40am. And get up around 7.15ish, I love being live-in! My previous job started at 7, but again live-in and the children often didn't wake until 7.30/8am.

I'm not sure how I could cope with a 'normal' job where I have to commute!!

CharlieCoCo · 12/07/2013 22:38

i start at 7.45. i set alarm for 7, have 2 snoozes so get up at 7.18 Grin. i dont understand how people can get up 5 mins before they start work, i am 'busy' getting ready the whole time between 7.18-7.44am and i dont shower or anything then.

Cathyrina · 13/07/2013 08:42

My job starts at 8, I walk 20-30 mins so get up at 7 even though I am awake around 6.30 without even using my alarm clock. I need half an hour to get dressed, put hair up, a little make up (no eyeliner or anything just some skin tone powder), pack my bag and then I leave. Don't feel like having breakfast in the morning even though I would have 10 mins time for that if I hurry a little but meeh, rather get dressed slowly :D I LOVE that I can walk, helps a lot to wake up properly

Skintorama · 13/07/2013 08:49

6am for a 7am start. Only Monday to Thursday though, I sleep in until 7 on a Friday.

And I've only just got up this morning.

Tanith · 13/07/2013 09:35

First child arrives at 6.30am, last child goes home at 6.30-7pm.

I get up at 5.45-6.00am.

DH gets a lie in, usually - our next child doesn't get here until 7.45. I get my lie in at the weekend.

Nannyme1 · 13/07/2013 10:05

Last job I started at 7am live out with quite a commute so had to be up and out the door by 5:45!
