I know this may not be the right board, but don't know where else it should be!!!
I have asked a friend to babysit soon and haven't a clue how much to pay her. I don't want to insult her so any comments would be appreciated.
Many thanks

We tend to pay anything between £6-£8 an hour

bluebear · 25/03/2006 21:17

We pay £7 per hour, but that's for a nursery nurse with childcare qualifications. We are in London (I guess these things vary considerably according to region).

thirtysomething · 25/03/2006 21:31

We pay £5 an hour in the North.

MrsSpoon · 25/03/2006 21:32

£5 per hour for a nursery nurse, we are in Scotland.

MrsSpoon · 25/03/2006 21:34

Should add we usually give her a tip on top of this, usually an extra £5 as she is a gem.

ThePrisoner · 26/03/2006 14:29

ljcooper3 · 26/03/2006 18:42

I am a babysitter in London and I charge £7 an hour.

KristinaM · 26/03/2006 18:43

Helen - if she's a friend will she expect paid? Or better with a gift?

Laura032004 · 26/03/2006 19:21

We pay £5 an hour, plus paid travelling time. Min of £20 though usually.

eemie · 26/03/2006 19:42

Was £6 per hour, minimum 4 hours, for qualified experienced nanny/nursery nurse. We recently put it up to £6.50. We're in Surrey.

Lynzie · 26/03/2006 22:01

I am a babysitter, and I normally get between £5 - £10 a hour. On a average night i normally get £30 and because i cant drive all the people i babysit for pay for a taxi home for me too, which is between £6-7 pounds

Helennn · 27/03/2006 12:16

Many thanks for all the replies. So it seems £5 per hour would be the minimum. I know as a friend a gift might be a nice idea but when you are a bit hard up, (as my friend unfortunately is at the moment), nothing can beat some cash in the hand.

Many thanks again for all the replies, once again it shows how useful mumsnet can be!!!

I get between £5-£7 an hour in Glasgow!

rainmum · 08/04/2006 15:36

We pay £5.00 per hour in West Lothian Scotland. I attended a child protection course recently and for leaving children with anyone under the age of sixteen is against the law. If anything happened to children or under age babysitter you would be held responsible. I dont know if English law is the same.
