I have 2 dds (7 and 2) one at school and the other at day nusery. We have no family anywhere near so if one of them is ill or school dates don't match (we are both teachers) then we are stuck. Does back up care for these sorts of circumstances exist? We have recently moved so don't know anyone in the area.

You should be able to find emergency nannies in most areas for exactly this. They cost money, mind, and won't 'know' your DCs

Better bet is to advertise locally for a babysitter, see who turns up and keep fingers crossed you find a SAHM/gran show up. Establish regular relationship via fortnightly babysitting and then ask if they'd be interested in ad hoc care. Problem solved.

Another option is to attend church regularly to get yourself known in community. Then you can ask/advertise this way.
