ok i might be worrying about nothing here but ofsted have asked me to go and see an independent doctor to check my health suitability and im panicking because i had PND 6 years ago and i took an overdose im over it now and am fine but im worried about what im going to do if they turn me down.

has anyone else been to one of these and what happens when you go?

I've not been to one of these but I just wanted to say try not to panic and be as honest as you can with them.

Good luck

HenniPenni · 06/02/2006 14:19

Never been to one, I think I would advise that you be as honest as you can with them. Do you still have regular contact with your GP?

LoveMyGirls · 06/02/2006 14:30

i do see my gp but not one in particular and not about the pnd that i had. i was undiagnosed for a year and it was more circumstance than metal health i was advised to see a counsellor which i did for about 2 years whilst i was sorting myself out to get out of an abusive reklationship and i was only 18. when ofsted visited i told her all this and she said it would be fine. i have let them have access to my health records from birth and i spent a few hours with ofsted yet they are still sending me to another doctor on one hand im pleased to see they are so thorough on the other i wanted to be up and running by march and this is another delay and im worrying i will get turned down and have gone through so much already to get the house ready etc lets just hope its over with soon.

they will just be covering their backs so they can say they have ticked all the boxes and got things thoroughly checked out.

LoveMyGirls · 06/02/2006 16:28

yeah you're probably right i just want to know if im the only one going through this as i really dont know what ill do if im refused. i didnt realise pnd would be held against me like this. it was such a long time ago and i was just a kid then really i could understand if id been a regular down at A&E but it was a one off, a cry for help.

I had severe PND, didn't attempt suicide but certainly felt like it, and had some pretty heavy-duty treatment to get me out the other side. I was registered when Social Services were in charge, and they were happy with a letter from the psychiatrist who had treated me, which gave details of what I'd been like, and how I was now OK.

LoveMyGirls - I would think that OFSTED are just doing this to ensure that you are now a "stable" person. I don't think you should panic too much (easier said than done, I'm sure). I've never heard of anyone having to see another doctor about it, but just be truthful - don't you just hate the way that "mental illness" is seen as something so bad?

saltire · 07/02/2006 10:58

I had severe PND. I wasn't sent for a health assesment by OFSTED, but they did ask permisssion to speak to my CPn and my Psychiatrist. They explained the reason for doing it was because they wanted to make sure that i could cope emotionally with the stress that sometimes comes from Childminding, not because they were looking for some reason ot to register me.
I get angry when people treat "mental health" illness as something wrong. Just tell the GP the truth, I'm sure you will be fine.

thanks for your support and helpfulness im prepared to answer any questions fully and i hope it doesnt affect my registration i just want to get it over with so i can start the ball rolling and stop worrying about it. ill come back and let you know how i get on no doubt.
