Extra Wages

Hi, I have recently worked an extra 8 days for the family I work for (1 month with no days off). I get paid 300 per week for a 5 day week, although i do work a couple of hours for them on a saturday morning and sunday evening, but I get time off in the week so I get over 2 days off per week. I have been paid extra for these 8 days but think I may have been paid wrong, could you please tell me how much you would pay your nanny extra for these days? Or how you would work out how much to pay her?

Would you do £300 / 7 days = £42.50 x 8 = £342.50

or

£300 / 5 days = £60 x 8 = £480

Thank you x

I would have paid the £60 x 8
Your working week is 5 days not 7

Or you could maybe divide it by your contracted hours (to give you your hourly rate) and multiply by the number of hours you actually worked?

I don't have set hours, it's live in so when the kids sare in bed i finsih. Usually 12 hours a day but was doing longer on extra days.

I'd do £300/5 because you normally work 5 days.

I've done live-in jobs and always had set hours. I think the fact that you're living there means you need to be more, not less, sure of the actual hours you are expected/paid to work.

If you're happy with the situation then obv it's up to you, but if you're not happy don't think that because you're live-in you can't have set hours.

i dont mind the hours as I usually finish at 8ish, half past at the latest, but feel abit short changed after not having a day off in a month then getting paid less than i'd expected.

I would speak to your employers, you should of got your daily rate of 60 per day of not more!

PutAnotherShrimpOnTheBarbie · 21/03/2012 13:11

I was on a months trial and now she wants me to sign the contract, so before i do that ill mention the money to her. Also just spoke to my agency and they agree that i should have been paid the full £60 per day. Thanks for all your reassurance, feel alot better now.

I would also ask to have your working hours formalised. If you've only been there a month they may have been on their best behaviour, but you don't want to end up working mad hours because there's not set boundaries.

They are taking the piss and breaking the law.

First of all as you are live in you are not paid £300 for a 5 day week, you are paid £300 plus board and lodging for a 5 day week. So if you work an extra day, you should get more than £60 - more like £80 (which places a value of £100pw on board and lodging).

You must have at least one unbroken day off per week, or two unbroken days off per fortnight. Are you really saying that you have been there for a month and have worked for them on every single day in that month? That is not work, that is slavery, and it is only going to get worse. Unless you are desparate, get out now.

I got paid the extra money I was owed. I am looking for a new position though as things aren't right here. Thanks for all your help!
