Childminders Club: Family members now need ENHANCED CRB's like us

HellyBelly · 28/01/2006 17:42

I've just had a newsletter saying from 3rd October 05, our dh's etc. need enhanced rather than standard CRB checks.

Has anyone got round to doing this yet? Do we have to pay or is it free like the first time round?

Thanks

What newsletter is it? i.e. Newsletter from whom, issue date etc. Ofsted Direct has recently been published, but on a quick glance I could not see much about CRB checks.

HellyBelly · 28/01/2006 17:59

It's something from our local council and it said REMINDER blablabla - I got worried thinking I should have known this already but I didn't!

If over the weekend others come on saying they don't know about it, I will will call my Early Years team on Monday.

There was a letter sent out by Ofsted back in October time, regarding changes to Childcare regulations and subsidised CRB checks. See SureStart News issue 31 . Perhaps it's something to do with that, though I thought it mostly affected nurseries, not childminders.

HellyBelly · 28/01/2006 18:25

Cheers for that. Ofsted are looking into why I haven't been receiving this sort of thing from them so maybe that's why I didn't know. According to this bit from my Early Years team, I need to sort dh out:

.............Family members of childminders who once only required a standard Disclosure now require an enhanced disclosure from 3rd October 2005.

My son turned 16 in October and I received his CRB form a few weeks ago. I have just checked it, and yes it is an enhanced one. There was no fee.

HellyBelly · 28/01/2006 18:31

How did you arrange this? When I did this for me and dh at the beginning of last year, I had to ask for a standard one for dh and an enhanced one for me. I'm not sure if I have to call the same people and give the same reference as before (may have to ask Early years team).

Hope there's no fee for this then.

Trouble is, if they re-do all the CRB's the cost is going to be very high. It's DfES funded I belive, so it's taxpayers who incur the cost - and as a taxpayer myself, I'm not sure we should - after all, hardly fair that as a nanny I have to pay for my own, yet you get yours and other family members ones for free.

Perhaps they are just doing all new CRB applications at Enhanced level, rather than going back through everyones. With luck your Early Years Team will be able to shead some more light on it next week.

goosey · 28/01/2006 18:36

I called my regional Ofsted office to let them know he was 16 and to ask how I should go about getting him checked for CRB clearance. They gave me the telephone number of somewhere more local to me who were in charge of handling the forms. I called them and they sent me the forms which I filled in and sent off to the address stated. It was quite straightforward.

HellyBelly · 28/01/2006 18:39

Good point Nannynick - not quite with it today (full off cold and feeling spaced out) so didn't think about that which I totally agree with!

My Oftsed inspector who came in December seemed happy with the CRB's etc. so maybe it's just a case of all new ones needing to be enhanced. Will call and check.

Thanks

I thought they always had to have enhanced crb?

frankieb · 02/02/2006 13:36

Hi
In Wales we all have to have enhanced.
It seems so different here to in England!
Take care
frankie

ThePrisoner · 02/02/2006 18:09

You have to have the enhanced one if your family members register as assistants (she says smugly, coz mine were done ages ago)!

HellyBelly · 02/02/2006 18:32

Right, had it confirmed. The newsletter we got was worded wrong as the person 'in the know' was away! Anyway, I've been told that all new CRB applications need to be enhanced but we don't need to get a new one now. I just need to make sure the one I get in 3 years is enhanced.

OP posts:
HellyBelly · 02/02/2006 18:33

Having said that, as dh is now an assistant, he'll need one then? Why didn't the Ofsted inspector tell me that when I asked? She just said they need a letter for their records saying he's my assistant.

how often do we have to renew the checks..anyone?

HellyBelly · 02/02/2006 19:38

I was told 3 years

OP posts:
nannynick · 02/02/2006 23:32

As an Approved Nanny, I have to renew mine every year... why are childminders allowed to renew every 3 years? (Don't expect anyone to know the answer to that one)

Out of interest... as we are talking about CRB checks, when filling in the form, who is signing Section X? The CCI does this on the registration visit, but for subsequent CRB checks, who's doing it then? What about CRB checks on family members, is the Registered Childminder able to complete section X in those cases?
Ofsted's website lists some documents about CRB checks, but upon selecting the link, the document no longer exists - have they changed things? Anyone know the current procedures?

HellyBelly · 03/02/2006 11:14

Don't take my 3 years as being correct - this is one person who told me that via email, they could always have got it wrong. I will try and find out for sure.

mumlove · 03/02/2006 12:17

If we have to have the checks more often why haven't ofsted ask me to do mine again?
I have only had mine done when I started minding 12 yrs ago!!

ThePrisoner · 03/02/2006 21:04

Same here mumlove

goosey · 03/02/2006 22:44

I filled out that section as the registered provider when I filled in the form for my son. In the same way I suppose as a nursery manager would fill it out for a new member of staff.

ayla99 · 05/02/2006 08:29

I have never been told to renew mine - I registered 5 years ago. Because of the new system I queried this with Ofsted (Jan 05) they told me they were starting a rolling programme to "update all checks carried out under the old system and to obtain Criminal Records Disclosures for all childminders and staff employed in Daycare for the under 8's."
