I will be going back to work soon. I am planning to have a nanny for my two boys who are five years and six months. I will be working 4 days a week and want child care from 8am to 6pm. Please could anyone tell me to how much could I be expected to pay for this?

Quoting net is v unhelpful and for the (above-board) employer agreeing a net wage is like signing a blank cheque tax-wise, eg if the tax code is strange or the nanny has two jobs. No other jobs work in net.

so many parents say its more expensive that others if I say £13 gross compared to £10 net for example.

That's because they don't plan to pay the tax and NI so by doing that you are ENCOURAGING them to defraud the state and rob you of your basic state pension.

Charging a net rate does not make me/ them not pay tax!?

I have never taken a position in which I wasn't paid tax/ ni.

Employers seem as I said to prefer talking net. They know they need to pay tax/ni and I explain all of this to them. In the end of course they pay the same but Il advertise whatever way makes them happy

Never had a gap between jobs

I as a nanny would be happy to work in gross as I've sometimes missed out when tax has gone down but most parents agencies seem to want to work in net!

I too make sure my jobs are on the books and Tax/NI is all payed.

I would also like it to be law that all Tax/NI was done by a payroll provide

I agree its an employers market at the moment but do be fair when discussing your nannies salary as you most often get what you pay for. I have always been more inclined to negotiate a lower wage if I've felt the family were unable to pay more than if I've felt they were just mean with money. This depending on whether I've really liked the job or my own overheads such as travel ect. were lower because of location but at the end of the day your nanny has to meet her own living costs.
