How much would you charge for this...

I look after 2 siblings after school. I charge a minimum of 3 hours for both but one of them is only here for approx 2 hours as they finish school at different times.

I've just been asked to drop one of them at an activity which will be a 20 mile round trip then drop the other one to his home (on my way home).

Would you charge extra for mileage?

Yes, I charge extra for mileage if I do extra as a specific request. I charge 45p per mile and my time driving at my usual hourly rate.

You need to be careful charging mileage as it is like being a taxi, maybe officially charge a higher rate but just don't call it mileage in your accounts. Personally I wouldn't do it as I have other kids to think of and what happens in bad weather but maybe that's just me as some parents used to take advantage when I used to drop some kids off so never again!

i too would say that I couldn't do it as I have my own children to consider once i finish work and wouldn't do it during working hours as it isn't fair on my other minded children

You're quite right Hayley. I don't call it mileage on my invoices.

I used to do regular pick ups and drop offs, but no more ... just occasionally now.

They aren't regulars anymore but i have been looking after them for over 3 years. They're just coming for a couple of days for the next 3 weeks. I don't have any other mindees at the same time otherwise i'd have definitely said no.

Oops, sent too soon! As it's only for a couple of weeks, I'm not going to charge more.

Thanks for the replies. Interesting about not officially charging mileage, I'll have to look into more to check what the rules are.
