I am looking at working from September for 3 days a week and have found a lovely girl who looked after our four year old at nursery who would love to nanny for her and our 6 month old. She is working towards NVQ level 3 but has never nannyed before. We are in Greater London - Teddington area area. We are trying to work out what a reasonable salary would be for her as it would be her first job. My husband is inceasingly frustrated about the net/gross thing but I think we have it worked out in our heads now!!

Does anyone have a good idea what a good rate would be and also wrt to sickness as she has a little girl who is often sick - should I allow her to bring her over as well if just a sniffle - or just say her own childcare would have to be sorted out properly

Net Gross thing... simply just agree Gross. Nursery would have paid gross.

Currently she is unqualified? So you could start at a bit more than nursery would pay, so say £6.50-£7 an hour as she probably was on NMW at nursery, so that will be more than nursery and is a reasonable wage. As a qualified nanny I was on only a little over £7 gross per hour (I'm in West Surrey) in my first nanny job.

Has she given any suggestions as to what salary she would like?

Is she wanting to bring her child to work with her? If so that then is a factor to consider when deciding salary... could lower the salary by 25-30% if not more.

If her daughter will be in a childcare setting and is ill, then that childcare setting may send her home. You will probably need to decide on a case by case basis if you feel it's suitable or practical for her to come to your home.

She has nvq level 2 - currently at college doing level3. Having never had a nanny before I also have no experience of what to expect from a nanny and whether when she starts we will get good value for money. We had thought we would have to pay about £8 net although we are going to have a contract with a gross figure
