Insurance: international v UK driving licences?

I have an au-pair from New Zealand. She is insured on my car, using her international drivers' licence.

The insurance co have just written to me to say they have changed their underwriting critera and now they will stop insuring her unless she gets a full UK licence.

Anyone else had this? Are my insurance co being funny, or is this typical? Is there some conversion process to turn her NZ or intl. licence into a UK one, or does she have to take the full written and practical tests?

Thanks all
