Brown Rice and brown pasta...maybe?
Brown bread (not wholemeal)
Oat porrdige(ready brek?)
Bran in everything (for an adult you just stir it in to casseroles, mince, lasagne etc)

But I'd get more specific advise from the Dr. I would ask for a diet sheet or get the parents to get the surgery to talk to you

Mojomummy · 23/10/2005 20:21

Does the mindee suffer from constipation ? if so I wouldn't give bran because this can really dry out the stools, making going more difficult.

Definetely agree with getting a diet sheet from the dr's.

jellyjelly · 23/10/2005 21:04

Their doctors have advised prunes as haas the hv but they do not have a diet plan it is up to me as long as it is hf. Child only goes once every 4 days and hard and dry.

how about more water?

PrettyCandles · 23/10/2005 21:20

Sorry Katymac, but don't don't don't give brown pasta or bran. Wheatbran works by irritating the bowel to keep things moving, and it can cause dreadful tummyaches and bloating. The best fibre is to be found in oats.

I've posted more on your other thread jellyjelly. Sorry, I think I assumed child was yours and called him your ds.

jellyjelly · 23/10/2005 21:21

have tried that already and hasnt made a difference,i have stopped him drinking lots of milkshakes and squashes.

hunkerpumpkin · 23/10/2005 21:22

If it's just because he's constipated, give him prunes and apple juice, not wedges of high-fibre bran, etc.

hunkerpumpkin · 23/10/2005 21:22

No bananas, and ease off cheese too.

jellyjelly · 23/10/2005 21:28

Thought bananas were good? Have posted more on another part. Father has digestional track cancers which started as a baby son is very very constipated and has nasty poos.

OP posts:
jellyjelly · 23/10/2005 21:29

I am trying to persuade the parents not to give smiley faces and nuggets but not getting throught to them.

OP posts:
hunkerpumpkin · 23/10/2005 21:29

Bananas are "binding" - can cause constipation.

What sort of milk does he have? Is he on follow-on?

hunkerpumpkin · 23/10/2005 21:31

They give him smiley faces and nuggets?! There's no helping some people is there, JJ

jellyjelly · 23/10/2005 21:37

has cows. and teen parents who are trying to do their best for him

OP posts:
hunkerpumpkin · 23/10/2005 21:39

Cows' milk not recommended before they're one as a main drink - wonder if this is part of the problem?

Cows' milk is too high in sodium and too low in other fats/minerals/vitamins.

But not follow-on - too much iron and will cause constipation to get worse.

PrettyCandles · 23/10/2005 21:40

Cows' milk or formula? He's a bit young to be drinking ordinary milk.

If he#s getting processed foods, then you need to make sure that he doesn't get any salt during the time he's with you, to try and 'make up' for the excessive amount of salt he'll be getting at home. Lots of fresh stuff, I guess. Steamed carrots, broccolli, peas, fruit, salad etc. Lots of water content in veg, which will also help.

ThePrisoner · 23/10/2005 22:39

To be honest, I think I would ask parents if you can give the baby's health visitor a ring to ask for advice. It is a bit heavy-duty to land you with the task of sorting out a diet like this for someone else's baby, and I think you need to take professional advice - that's not to say any mumsnetters are not "professional", but you don't want anyone blaming you if the baby is, or continues to be, unwell. Saying, "some people on the internet said ..." doesn't sound good!!! (I'm really not trying to insult everybody here, sorry!)

hoolagirl · 23/10/2005 23:09

My 9mth ds suffers from constipation and so does my neighbours 10mth dd.
Between us we have found that spoon feeding them prune juice and letting them eat piles of raisins has wonderful effect but not a brutal one.
The doc had prescriped a laxative for my son, but the prune juice i feel works better.

hoolagirl · 23/10/2005 23:10

ps, i should add that the prune juice is extremely messy, put on an old bib!!

katymac · 23/10/2005 23:13

Yep - everyones general consensus is get advise...good luck

Mojomummy · 24/10/2005 00:04

This is sad.
If baby is constipated has he been prescribed lactulose ? This will help to soften & make it easier for him to go. Poor lad doesn't want to develop of holding on because it hurts to go.

Don't give cows milk, this is constipating as are bananas.

Can you make a lentil shepherds pie, using lentils instead of meat, lentil bolognese. Take out the squashes completely as they offer no nutrition. Very diluted pure juice is best option if he won't take water. Lightly cook apples too & offer instead of yogurts. Also mix with prunes if he won't eat them on their own.

bobbybob · 24/10/2005 02:21

Lots of oil - olive oil, flax seed oil (must be cold)even normal veggie oil. Will make poo very greasy and easy to slip out.

I would suggest not that the lack of fibre is constipating but a completely unsuitable home diet full of salt and cows milk. Guts are simply too immature to handle that.

And sorry to say, but if you give lots of fruit etc on top of that diet, baby will end up with fermenting fruit on top of the blockage and be even more uncomfortable.

jellyjelly · 24/10/2005 10:52

Thanks for all your help, he has been prescribes laxatives and he is on cows because the parents cant afford the formula and they will continue to feed him rubbish because it is cheap.

Thanks again.
