Nanny's mileage

When calculating nanny's mileage is it normal to use the place of work as the start off point? (ie. my house?)

I have given my nanny a book to record mileage which I reimburse at the end of the week but she is using her house as a start off point when she collects my son from nursery.... She lives 15 miles from us and the difference is 10 miles (nursery is 4.6 miles from house).

If she collects him every day that's an extra £4.00/day in mileage!

Yes, milage from the place of work. Not milage from employees home.

Not sure what tax implications there are if you start paying for employees travel to work.

however in one of my jobs, school / their house / my house was an exact 7mile triangle, so id use mine knowing the distance was the same.

Had i have lived further away would have only charged 7 miles though, as MB /DB could reasonable ask them to go to theirs first, and then would only charge from their house

bit cheeky she is recording from her house to nursery, but does she go from her house to there and not from yours? so maybe an honest mistake

If her day starts when she picks up your child from nursery then that counts as travelling to work so shouldn't be paid mileage for it at all, if she had your child before nursery and went back to hers in between then maybe she can claim from your house to the nursery as though she had been waiting at yours to pick up again.

Does she have to use her car to get to work because you need her to use it in order to look after your child?

Could she get to work a different way if you did not need her to use her car during the course of her working day?

eeyore yes her day starts when she picks DS up from nursery.

bibbity she would have to use her car to get here as we are in a rural area. However, she does use the car to take him on outings - swimming etc but this was her choice as I offered to buy a bus pass or pay 40p mileage + any increase in insurance (there was none). She could use the bus to get here but it would take about 2 hours compared to half an hour in the car... not sure about cost.

Ok I will just assume it's a misunderstanding and say that sorry mileage is paid from our house and back. Just wanted to check I wasn't being mean!

pdr - You should be clear with her that mileage is paid when she is working for you - not her commute.

i.e. - you ask her to start at x hour at nrsery pick up time. she then drives home and later to library then back to your house. Mileage is paid for all trips from nursery pick up.

if she STARTS collecting child from nursery then shoudnt be paid for traveling there... although if your house is 7m from hers and nursey 10m, i think she can claim 3 of them?

Just to clarify when i lived / worked / schooled in a 7m triangle I would either charge from when i got TO charges house or TO charges school.
Sometimes i didnt go back to charges house (cause up to date with nursery duties) and would go back to MY house (bosses fine with this) but id still charge for the journey and from my house, as i couldnt wait at school, and had to drive 7miles anyway, either to bosses house OR to mine, so didnt cost my bosses any 'extra'

I dont think its legal to be paid for the journey to / from place of work, just for travel during work and FOR work

Have sorted this with her now - thanks for the advice have saved myself a fortune!
