Not sure how it is done now, as it is contracted out in many areas.

Previously, you applied via Ofsted - completing a large application form, then attending a long interview (involving practical testing on use of IT equipment).

Inspectors I are B2 (HEO) civil service grade, so around £27,800 - £30,500 (London B2) - in 2009/10

You can find some application documents to give you a feel for what paperwork needs to be completed to apply for a job on Careers.ofsted.gov.uk

I was looking at this the other day in my plan to take over the world.

Connexions has some good info.
