Not a problem per se just astounded that my au pair as got through 6 rolls of toilet paper by herself in 2 weeks!! I have had this with two other au pairs and wondered what it is that they do so differently? The four of us have not used anywhere near this amount between us in the same time frame! I know it is a bit of a daft one but honeslty 6 rolls of the stuff..... anyone else noticed this?
She's great though so I am prepared to overlook it!
Whizz.

how weird - you could always hand out sheets, and ask if no 1 or 2

school did this years ago as girls were blocking the toilets up and we had to ASK for loo roll, the culprits soon stopped

gigglet · 08/08/2010 12:55

Give her single ply.

A friend had this problem with a flatmate. She discovered she would use a certain length rather than thickness.

thebody · 08/08/2010 13:39

but how on earth do you have the time or inclintaion to count how much she uses in the first place.. lol..

catepilarr · 08/08/2010 20:52

i guess when such amount of toilet paper disappears, you do notice ;)

whizzylala · 09/08/2010 08:59

I don't count - it is pretty easy to notice -you put three rolls in her toilet thinking that will last a month or so and she is asking for more in a matter of days.....no counting required!

3 in a week is a lot

I would expect maybe one a week for a single person

not sure how much we use but I changed it this morning so will see how long it takes for dh and I to get through it

ppeatfruit · 09/08/2010 14:17

When our family is economising we use loo roll for tissues, kitchen paper etc. maybe yr au pair is doing the same.

BoffinMum · 10/08/2010 21:54

I speak as a half German person. In my extended family we use the same amount of toilet paper as English people. The bidets in our German houses are not used a great deal as we tend to - ahem - wipe instead. Some German toilets do have indeed little poo shelves so you can examine your offering for health purposes, but by no means all toilets have these and not all German people like them. It is not a common cultural practice to stuff loads of loo roll down there.

I would tell her not to be so daft and that she's blocking the pipes. She'll soon stop.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/08/2010 09:24

still have bout half a roll left, and thats with dh having a curry last night Grin

funkychunkymunky · 11/08/2010 09:30

I don't actually think that 6 rolls in 2 weeks is too bad...

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/08/2010 10:57

thats 3 rolls aweek,so basicaly one every other day

ours is still going and dh and both use .......

NoseyNooNoo · 11/08/2010 22:36

My mum used to go on about how many loo rolls we used. Every time someone came around she'd tell them - the shame of it...

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/08/2010 12:44

right we needed a new one this morning, therefore our loo roll lasted 5 days for dh and i, and had dh work collegue using our toilet most morings as well, so tech 3 adults lol

quaere · 14/08/2010 12:48

I had a housemate who used a mad amount of TP. She wasn't foreign, but she was quite paranoid worried about germs etc. and used to line the loo-seat with it. Ridiculous behaviour imo

blueshoes · 14/08/2010 23:02

Whizzylala, does your aupair have to clean the bathroom?

I discovered some aupairs were using the toilet roll to clean the bathroom - I have white toilet floors that show every hair and streak and they were using toilet roll to clean the floors. It is now in my house rules they are not allowed to do cleaning with toilet paper (or kitchen towel).

Cathalyna · 05/11/2012 20:52

Oh this is funny...

Well, I am a German live-in Nanny and yes, I use a lot of toilet paper to:

  • Wipe nose
  • Clean ears/ fingernails (dirt or nail polish)
  • Wrap pad stuff
  • Clean surfaces (although not the entire bathroom)
  • Dry hands when no towel around
etc.

But nothing special in general. And I don't think 6 rolls in 2 weeks is waaay too much. There is no rule how much toilet paper you have to use or what is too much as long as you're comfortable. Of course it's not nice for you to pay it all the time - maybe you could somehow mention it in a nice way and not too direct. Could possibly be an option to pay her a few pounds more per week (even if it's just 2 or 3) and let her pay for the toilet paper herself.

I think it's quite rude to tell everyone and make her hear it. Something like this is private and should be discussed/ solved in private.

Anyway, this topic is quite old. Sorry :D

whiz I had the same problem with german au pair, and it put me off for life, no German gilrs for me. Its not that much that toilet paper bothered me, as the fact she was emotinally dead when it came down to playing and interacting with my 2 y o DS. she only lasted few days, we just had to change her! they are also a bit funny about the food, i had bought her like 2x6 packs of yogurts and the fridge was stuffed, but when I took one yogurt, she looked quite shocked Hmm

lollyshmollypop · 06/11/2012 14:12

now I have lovely Czech girl Grin
