How soon can you go swimming after giving birth?

Forgot to ask the midwife. I assume its when you stop bleeding as there may be a risk of infection? Anyone know?

was it natural, or c section? did you have stitches?
assuming all completely natural, and you didnt tear, then probly once you have stopped bleeding. same as periods really
i remember i didnt for ages though as the tought of putting chloriny nipple into babies mout put me off.

Maybe after the 6 week check so you know your cervix is closed? Am only guessing really, I would check with a MW or GP first though.

I'm full of admiration for your keeness to exercise though.

I asked the midwife about 3 hours after giving birth!!! She said that as I didn't have stitches I would be ok as soon as I felt ready, but not to take ds into the pool yet as it's too cold.

As far as I am aware it's when you feel well and have stopped bleeding. For babies the advice (from the manager of my local pool) is when they've had their immunisations.

Thanks everyone. Am seeing the health visitor this afternoon so will double check with her. Wasn't going to take ds in as its an outdoor pool and although the water is warm the air temperature isnt!

I will have my sisters on hand to help with the older two if I don't go in the water. There is also a band playing so I may just sit and watch everyone (this is a birthday treat). A lot of it of course depends on the weather.

Still going back to swimming as soon as I possibly can though....
