POLL - are you a screamer, a moo-er or eerily silent during labour?

From the "lying down to be examined" thread - there seem to be a few of us who begged to be examined because the midwives didn't believe that we were in labour. It happened to me, and I was completely silent during contractions, so I assume that it is more normal to be vocal. Is it? No judgement call about whether any method is "better" by the way - I'm in the "whatever gets you through" camp.

I didn't scream, moo or keep quiet. I whinged and grumbled.

MadamAnt · 20/01/2009 19:19

I was silent

Except for occasional whimperings for drugs

I think I might have made up for it with blood curdling screams in the last minute of DS's birth though.

sparklefrog · 20/01/2009 19:22

Until it get unbearably painful, I'm quite quiet, suppose embarrassed, don't like people looking at me, but when I hit that transitional stage, I am loud, aggressive, shout, swear, scream, then swear some more, until I'm sure the whole labour ward can hear me, but by that time, I really don't care. I hate everyone and everything at that point, and want everyone to know it, lol.

Lemontart · 20/01/2009 19:23

I was a teeth grittingly silent one all the way through. I had the awful habit of clenching up with the onset of contraction and almost not breathing (let alone talking) until it was over - much to the consternation of my mw!!
DH would not shut up - jabbered on talking the entire time from nerves, nearly drove me spare

Wonderstuff · 20/01/2009 19:25

I mooed and talked a load of ru7bbish and was very attached to the gas and air

I whimper and snuffle in a self pitying manner.

nuttygirl · 20/01/2009 19:28

Erm, well mw's didn't believe I was in labour despite my loud "ow, ow, ow" noises so I tried shouting for drugs, then screaming for drugs, screaming that I have dizzy fits and would pass out, screaming that I need some f'ing drugs and to find someone who could f'ing give me some. When I was finally given some I turned into a moo-er

Fragoluccia · 20/01/2009 19:29

I yelled so hard and so loudly I turned the colour of the T-Mobile ad on the right hand side of the screen

BibiThree · 20/01/2009 19:30

I most certainly mooed.

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 20/01/2009 19:31

I growled. Apparently. Every contraction a low, throaty, animal hgggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. I didn't know this at the time.

I felt it the next day though, I tell you! My throat fecking HURT!!

RhinestoneCowgirl · 20/01/2009 19:31

Low moaning here, v little talking in between contractions, followed by turning into gibbering wreck at transition.

ten10 · 20/01/2009 19:31

Made a lot of noise during contractions before I got the epidural, mainly grunty type noises rather than mooing or screaming, I did cry though.

Didn't shut up after epidural but because we were chatting, but I did also sleep for a lot of this and DP said I snored rather a lot.

I was pretty silent most of the 2nd stage of labour, except when I was trying to tell DP that I WAS PUSHING,

cazboldy · 20/01/2009 19:31

I really retreat in on myself, and go all quiet.

have had 5 and didnt scream once.......except at dh when he hadn't unlocked he front door for the mw while I was giving birth in the bath

ten10 · 20/01/2009 19:32

Forgot to say, that down the corridor from me was what sounded like a wild animal, I have never heard a woman make noises like she did, (really rather off putting)

LOL at cazboldy! I'm a quiet labourer! No noise either time once with just G&A then pethadine, second time with epi, but I was told (from a dubious source tbh) that it was a waste of effort. But imo if you have no pain relief or you do, do whatever gets you through, you won't remember!

tvfriend · 20/01/2009 19:39

V quiet during contractions- midwives outside were all laughing apparently as screams were coming from all the rooms except mine. Made up for it when pushing (only 6 mins)- screaming and swearing like a trooper.

Beccabump · 20/01/2009 19:40

I was absolutely silent even when delivering. Woman across from me in the labour ward, well she was a screamer - the mw's were taking it in turns to sit with her as she was so loud!!!

Honeymum · 20/01/2009 19:43

Definitely a moo-er. Cannot be helped and comes from I know not where.

waspriceyp · 20/01/2009 19:44

I do remember thinking the first time around even in the throes of labour, "why can I hear cats shagging outside?" My DH looked at me in the most concerned way, because obviously the pethadine had kicked in and that's what I thought I heard, but it was in fact the woman next door. Cue me the next day "I didn't sound like cats shagging did it".

chancelloroftheexCHEQUERS · 20/01/2009 19:46

Self pitying crying here and lots of complaining about how I couldn't do it.

(I couldn't)

MrsTittleMouse · 20/01/2009 19:46

I was actually looking forward to being able to let rip during labour and shout and swear at the world in general - or to make exotic noises. But it wasn't to be.

CharCharGabor · 20/01/2009 19:47

I was all whingy and snivelly until the major pain kicked in. Then I was a big loud animalistic screamer I could hear myself as if it was someone else and remember thinking I sounded like an animal.

Greatsweetkittyothepuddingrace · 20/01/2009 19:50

Full blown screamer here, I have back to back contractions though v intense from word go and my last labour was 95m from waters to baby
