POLL - are you a screamer, a moo-er or eerily silent during labour?

From the "lying down to be examined" thread - there seem to be a few of us who begged to be examined because the midwives didn't believe that we were in labour. It happened to me, and I was completely silent during contractions, so I assume that it is more normal to be vocal. Is it? No judgement call about whether any method is "better" by the way - I'm in the "whatever gets you through" camp.

Oooo and a 'I'm f**g dying and your all sat about watching me are you simple? Shut the f*k up!!!'

On the very to of my voice. Surprised they didn't evacuate the unit for sake of others trying to labour!

The Line of the labour I think.

pushchair · 20/01/2009 22:24

1st two had epidurals and chatted away until pushing time when I made 'pushing' noises.
Last one I breathed and panted for most of it. Started the throwing up stage and said stuff like 'oh god, oh god' and then made the strange scream/growl/moan feeling the pressure but am not at the hospital panic stage noises.

Dp told me I sounded like lowing cattle near the end.

That was a helpful intervention

cyteen · 20/01/2009 22:46

Breathing, then mooing, then operatic screaming for the final half hour

littlelamb · 20/01/2009 22:48

Pretty much silent in labour (especially when I got gas and air which made me so off my head I couldn't verbalise anything) but for the pushing stage I am a definate grunter

Dropdeadfred · 20/01/2009 22:49

i am pretty quiet..aprt frm a few quiet sobs during the 'ring of fire' stage

MrsGrouchoMarxMerryHenry · 20/01/2009 22:50

I "hummmmmmmed" very low - made my voice vibrate into the depths of my womb, so it acted as a DIY tens machine! (much better than the actual thing!)

Apart from that I moaned during contractions, not especially loudly. I was very thoughtful and considerate to those around me, until the OB came in and said they'd have to operate if I didn't get DS out soon - I turned and said determinedly: "I can, and I WILL!" then pushed him out a few minutes later (not without consequence to my poor body ). Missed my chance to rip DH's arm off, though, damn!

TinkerBellesMumandFiFi2 · 20/01/2009 22:54

First one I mooed when I was at home but spent the time going "ow ow ow" at the hospital, Mum and my OH said I sounded like I'd stubbed my toe.

Second I did "ow ow ow" all the way through, although I was rushed for a CS/GA at fully dilated, it was my first "pain relief" though.

Third I was quiet until I got to the hospital but my contractions were off the chart and getting higher each time. They gave me pethidine which knocked me out but I was waking myself screaming in my sleep. And this was waiting to see if I really was in labour so they could take me in for a CS!

Silent with a bit of groaning towards the end. Tend to take pain inside if you see what I mean - feel noise is wasting precious energy - this isn't a considered thing - just seems to be what happens.

feedthegoat · 20/01/2009 23:39

I was much quieter than thought I'd be! Did alot of head rolling instead (knew it looked strange but couldn't stop myself. Got strangely absorbed in a documentary on tv about Rasputin (instead of screaming) which seemed really fascinating especially after drugs!

treedelivery · 20/01/2009 23:39

Was nobody else abusive and rude? Is it just me?

I sang for a lot of the first stage - sort of 'Haaaaahhhhh' going up the scale when the contractions increased. (It was a vague memory of something someone had told me about controlling breathing and concentrating). Then got onto gas and air and talked bollocks at intervals between sucking on it and giggling to myself.
ANd then shrieked and howled for the final stage.
BTW I apologised to my mum for swearing at one point and she said that she thought it was dull and couldn't I come up with some new words. So the next contraction was enlived with yells of 'Bush!BLunkett! BLOODY BLAIR!'

Turniphead1 · 20/01/2009 23:53

treedelivery if it makes you feel better during labour no.3 (a mere 3 weeks ago) at transition during my natural birth (when I decided to demand an epidural - it was too late!!) I was abusive to my two lovely midwives and DH - called them liars when they said that, yes, they had called the anaesthatist. In fact they had called him! The minute baby was delivered 6 minutes later I returned to a normal person and was very embarrassed but kind of think, they have probably seen it all!

TinkerBellesMumandFiFi2 · 20/01/2009 23:54

tree, I was at some points! With the first everyone seemed on edge, no one ever told me I was in labour (I was 20 weeks) it was a very strange atmosphere. At one point one of the MWs put a sheet over my legs and I threw it on the floor and growled "I'm too HOT!" she looked terrified! I always thought it was odd (MW should be used to abusive women and I wasn't really) but recently I've thought more about it and realised it was the whole atmosphere in there.

I got to a point with the G&A where I was shaking so much I couldn't hold it, so I asked Mum to. She misunderstood me and took it away - just as another contraction hit! I sort of shouted at her not to take it away

Actually I think those were the worst I got.

QueenFee · 20/01/2009 23:55

I had to ask DH
Apparently I MOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

treedelivery · 20/01/2009 23:56

I think I'm still winning the bitch in labour prize, you all sound like ladies.

I will be more well bred this time, I will I will I will.

electra · 21/01/2009 01:30

I'm a screamer/mooer/crier! I don't want to make the noises but they just come out...! Last time I remember wondering what it was and then realising it was me

cyteen · 21/01/2009 08:13

tree I was really looking forward to being abusive but somehow it never happened
