ANyone about to give birth or having given birth naturally with a low lying placenta?

Hi Mums and Mums-to-be

first, thanks for your help on my previous posts : I found this forum really easy-going and I get real good advice from you...it is reassuring !

At my last visit my consultant calculated that my placenta was lying 3 cm away from the cervix. If it was 2 cm he would recommend a planned c-section. He explained that I could have a natural birth, unless I started bleeding.

Has anyone of you been in this situation ? Is there a real risk of emergency cesarean ? Is there anything I should avid during labour to prevent bleeding ?

Well first of all your placenta is not on your cervix and it will still move up a bit as your lower segment is not fully formed yet.
You can't do anything about this unfortunately... if your Dr feels you can have a vaginal birth - believe me he must feel like it is a safe option otherwise he would (in this day and age) strongly recommend a section.

I was just a bit annoyed as at the 3rd scan, the echographer said the placenta had moved up and thought I was spared from any risk.

I was in similar situation. Up to my 36 weeks scan it wasn't clear whether the placenta was on the way or not. To cut a long story short the doctor finally did an internal scan to determine exactly where the placenta was. As pupuce said if it is not covering the cervis you should be fine. After much stres about the whole thing, I had a lovely natural birth with no complications.

They said the same to me about my low-lyimg placenta - deliver naturally as it was 3cm away. One week b4 due date, started to bleed heavily, rushed to hosp by ambulance.

Took me straight to theatre for c-section but when examined on arrival and they said that the bit that was 3cms away had come away - hence the bleeding - and that they thought I would be able to deliver naturally. After 11 hours of agonising labour they decided I had been through enough and had stopped progressing at around 7cms (due to body going into shock) so they took me back to theatre and I had an emergency c-section.
