Tea and toast in hospital

I know it's a minor point in the grand scheme of things, but I felt quite insulted to be given bread and jam for breakfast after giving birth - apparently some health + safety bod thought it unsafe to let patients near a toaster!

This despite the same patients getting up and making tea / hot drinks with no problem at all.

Did anyone get toast in their hospital? Which hospital was it? Apparently the head of postnatal care is trying to source a toaster which will keep H+S happy, but quite rightly it's hardly a priority!

It's only for a few days

Loadsa toast in my hospital. And if the lovely lovely lady, who had merely hours ago just had her third child and was bouncing round the ward making toast for those of us that had C-sections,can I say a belated thankyou, it was the nicest toast ever!

artichokes · 04/01/2009 21:11

HOw odd.
I got toast straight after the birth and for breakfast.
That was Queen Charlottes in London.

FrostytheSurfmum · 04/01/2009 21:13

The toast I had after I had dd was the best thing I'd ever tasted.

MegBusset · 04/01/2009 21:13

I got hot buttered toast after giving birth to DS. It tasted amazing! The rest of the food there was totally inedible, though.

Kbear · 04/01/2009 21:14

TOAST? TOAST? Not in my hospital, didn't get as much as a cup of tea or a well done love or anything. TOAST - you must be private!! LOL

Kbear · 04/01/2009 21:14

I have toast envy.

ohdearwhatamess · 04/01/2009 21:14

Toast freely available at the Luton & Dunstable Hospital. Immediately after birth, and whenever it was wanted.

I did manage to set fire alarms off one day when making toast (big, scary industrial toaster ).

Glad to see the mythical tea and toast exists in some places - is this on the NHS though?

The rest of St George's food was fine as long as you got there while it was hot - so would have helped if I'd been told when mealtimes were...

Yes, mine was NHS hospital (Chase Farm). Toast was the only food they managed to get right.

Kbear · 04/01/2009 21:16

Should I have got over this by now? DD is nearly 10 but I am upset I didn't get toast. I was offered a blood transfusion so that's something!

annabelcaramel · 04/01/2009 21:17

Mine was definitely nhs toast.

HeinzSight · 04/01/2009 21:17

I had tea and toast not long after giving birth, and it was the best toast I had ever had in my life.

You were robbed !

CaptainKarvol · 04/01/2009 21:18

I have toast envy too! I keep reading about this post-birth toast on MN - I didn't get anything at all (so much as a glass of water) after my 23 hour labour.

And (while I'm on the subject) I got told off for holding DS in my arms when I got my breakfast cereal the next day. Apparently I should have left my crying newborn in his plastic box while I fed myself...

wheresthehamster · 04/01/2009 21:19

Three cheers for the delicious toast at the Rosie. So good I went back for more 3 years later!

annabelcaramel · 04/01/2009 21:19

If I have another toast is the first thing I shall put in my birth plan.

artichokes · 04/01/2009 21:20

Mine too was NHS toast. As a consequence the jam was poor quality.

randomcupsoftea · 04/01/2009 21:20

Once got offered some toast but the other times nothing. Last time I got a cup of tea after dh asked - that was after dd arriving early, being put in scbu & me having a hemorrage.

aGalChangedHerName · 04/01/2009 21:20

Loads of tea and toast when i had ds1 but bloody DH ate it while i was getting fressed after my shower. I was absolutely starving. Got nothing else till lunch on the ward which was crap!!

Have never let him forget it either.

Kbear · 04/01/2009 21:20

I am writing to my NHS trust as we speak - Disgraceful.

LOL

Wheelybug · 04/01/2009 21:21

No toast at Kingston - just manky white bread.

Kbear · 04/01/2009 21:21

Isn't all food in hospital warm salad or fish pie?

Kbear · 04/01/2009 21:22

I had an op in a private hospital and was completely beside myself with excitement when I had a menu and they came and took my order! Was worth having my throat cut for!

Pinkyminkee · 04/01/2009 21:26

Yup tea and toast and even a very nice fresh sandwich as I has missed dinner. Frequently brought tea and toast when bfeeding at night, too. Staff brought me my meals post cs's.

AT the other hosp, where I had DS there was a 'kitchen' with cornflakes and white bread and a toaster, but having had a crash cs I never saw any food whilst bedriiden or bfeeding.

BakewellTarts · 04/01/2009 21:26

Tea and Toast at the Lister Herts (NHS) both times...H&S gone mad not to let you have it.
