Tea and toast in hospital

I know it's a minor point in the grand scheme of things, but I felt quite insulted to be given bread and jam for breakfast after giving birth - apparently some health + safety bod thought it unsafe to let patients near a toaster!

This despite the same patients getting up and making tea / hot drinks with no problem at all.

Did anyone get toast in their hospital? Which hospital was it? Apparently the head of postnatal care is trying to source a toaster which will keep H+S happy, but quite rightly it's hardly a priority!

It was breakfast time after DS1 and had to go to the dining room to have cereal and toast (which I promptly threw up in the loo 10 minutes later ).

With DS2 It was tea time and DH went and got a McDonalds and I went down and sat in the car with him and ate it whilst my Mum stayed with DS2. Both were at Cheltenham Gen.

dinny - when did you give birth at George's? That's the hospital I was in where H+S have got rid of the toaster!

Fortunately I had loads of food with me - needed it after 39-hour labour with almost nothing, then 3 hours on recovery before finally reaching postnatal ward...

Got given a ham sandwich at the RFH, along with the helpful comment that they knew I was vegetarian but there weren't any cheese ones left...

I got tea and toast at St Peter's Chertsey after having DS.

Had DD there too in Oct, and was offered a roast or sandwich!

Lots of folk complain about the hosp food, but if someone is going to deliver hot food to the end of my bed without me having to lift a finger - that's always going to be a winner with me! I always liked the way thay when they served your meal, they would always leave you with a sandwich too (which was then scoffed by hubby!).

helips · 05/01/2009 11:00

All I got was a cuppa and a digestive biscuit! Was told that because I had c-section they didn't want to risk giving me any proper food. The next morning I got bread and jam, apparently the toaster was broken

wotulookinat · 05/01/2009 11:04

Think yourself lucky getting toast! I had nothing from when I was admitted at 1am Thursday morning (DS was born 24 hours later) until 6pm Friday evening.

BabyTalk13 · 05/01/2009 11:19

Me, my partner, my mum and my sister all got buttered toast with jam and tea straight after the birth, it was lovely didnt stay in long enough for breakfast!! (st peters hospital, chertsey)

BabyTalk13 · 05/01/2009 11:22

Oh actually once wed got down on the ward we got offered drinks and a sandwich aswell

eandh · 05/01/2009 11:28

I had an egg sarnie after a failed ecv attempt (had to stay in for an hour to monitor baby)

After dd1 I was allowed tea and toast but not for 4 hours (had section) hadnt eaten since 10pm the night before so was almost 22 hours later and was lovely, also had a fab roast chicken dinner at lunch time the next day!

After dd2 (another planned section) I had to ask for toast but did get some and some morphine at the same time food was not as good 2nd time round though (this was Maidstone hospital) and Mum bought me in a lovely jacket potato and home made coleslaw the next night

MrsHappy · 05/01/2009 11:35

of Artichokes.
I was at QC too. I gave birth (emcs) at lunchtime on the Friday (following a 36 hour food-free labour) and got nothing until breakfast on Saturday.

Having said that when the lady brought me cornflakes with full fat milk, a biscuit and a roll with butter and jam I thought it was the nicest breakfast ever. And when she slipped me a second roll and jam I pretty much told her that I loved her.

Tea and toast at Royal Berks (NHS). It was lovely, especially as it was the first thing that I'd eaten in about 3 months that didn't give me heartburn.
I was only in overnight and missed breakfast (was asleep after being up all night feeding DS) so I don't know what that was like but someone did come round with a trolley offering cups of tea.

LackaDAISYcal · 05/01/2009 11:47

I got tea and toast, but had to ask for it!

then my doula had to go and make it!!

she did offer though as the MWs were a leetle bit busy that night.

On the PN ward (transitional care) we made our own breakfast so used the toaster ourselves; it was a Dualit one iirc. Hospital was Leeds General Infirmary, and yes on the NHS.

sfxmum · 05/01/2009 11:48

I had white bread 'sandwich' just margarine and a cup of tea, the toaster was broken but it tasted lovely I was starving

West Middlesex Hospital
can't remember breakfast in the ward bt I think there was toast and cereals

Lotster · 05/01/2009 15:59

I was made to have tea and toast before the labour really got going, at St Thomas's London.
Seem to remember on the ward getting cereal, bread and jam and tea for the next couple of days. Probably because it's from a travelling cart...

oopsacoconut · 05/01/2009 17:02

I got Tea and toast - Tea in a bone China tea cup and saucer, bone china plate too beautifully set tray with little pot of jam on the side. mmmmm or so DH said I was too busy vomiting to care. I did miss dinner the night I was induced so they sent me down 3 differnet sarnies and DH had access to a fridge full or sarnies and lots of tea and fresh coffee.

NHS here too - RUH Bath - admittedly very very quiet night on L&D I was only one of 3 to give birth there (naturally) that night

solidgoldsoddingjanuaryagain · 05/01/2009 17:08

I got tea and toast after DS was born (Lewisham Hospital) and they kindly made some for my mum as well. however the next day I got no food at all until about 3pm when I asked piteously if there was any medical reason why I wasn;t being fed, and a nice midwife made me some more tea and toast...

StarlightWonderStarlightBright · 05/01/2009 17:23

Tea and toast - NHS Chase Farm (Ridgeway)

Tea and toast - NHS Edgeware Birthing Centre

Beccabump · 05/01/2009 19:49

Cup of tea straight after delivery of DD at Chelt Gen nothing else to eat as kept missing the dining room call (you had to go down there!!) but did discover that they kept the sarnies in the little fridge all night and the ice cream in the freezer and mw's turned a blind eye to hungry mums on the rampage!!

nappyzonehasastroppytoddler · 05/01/2009 19:53

i got tea and toast during labour and just after at north tees hospital, at south tees after ds i hit lucky on lunchtime and got fish pie. No toast.

tigger15 · 05/01/2009 20:01

Tea only but toast in the morning. I had an emcs after 21 hours labour and as they wheeled me out asked if I could eat something, the anaethetist said "maybe in the morning", (this is at 1am) I said "I haven't eaten since 8am this morning!!!!!!", the mw offered me tea about 10 mins later but I wasn't prepared to stay awake unless toast was on offer too so got both in the morning.

St Mary's Paddington 2007.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 05/01/2009 20:02

Only reason I had homebirths really... Tea and toast in comfort of my own home Although this time I had muesli too as DD arrived just before brekkie.

Did experience hospital food with DS as he was admitted at 5 days old - no toast at breakfast, just bread rolls or cereal (Southmead Hospital, Bristol)

Guadalupe · 05/01/2009 20:03

Something about that magic tea and toast. I ate it for about a week trying to recreate the moment.

nkf · 05/01/2009 20:04

It was quite the most delicious tea and toast I'd ever had. I scoffed it down.

Tallulah1978 · 05/01/2009 20:09

Have to agree - it was the best tea and toast I have ever had even though it was cold - St James Hospital - Leeds (NHS).

chandellina · 05/01/2009 21:30

i didn't get my toast. midwife apologised, said there was no one to fetch it or some such.

don't think i ate for two days actually but didn't really notice.
