Tea and toast in hospital

I know it's a minor point in the grand scheme of things, but I felt quite insulted to be given bread and jam for breakfast after giving birth - apparently some health + safety bod thought it unsafe to let patients near a toaster!

This despite the same patients getting up and making tea / hot drinks with no problem at all.

Did anyone get toast in their hospital? Which hospital was it? Apparently the head of postnatal care is trying to source a toaster which will keep H+S happy, but quite rightly it's hardly a priority!

We make toast for our patients - not maternity - but have had to change to another bread which is a bit rubbish - apparently it's saved the Trust £12000 per year though - so somebody somewhere was eating a helluva lot of toast!!!

Tea and Toast in delivery suite after DS2 was born in Conquest hospital, Hastings. Best thing EVER

Midwife even went and fetched more jam for me!!

And the next morning there was a toaster for Mums on the ward to get up and help themselves, along with those little boxes of cereal and a buffet of prunes or grapefruit segments!!

When MW brought me tea and toast after ds was born, I kissed her - without a doubt the most delicious thing I have ever eaten.

After my emcs with dd, the MW went to the staff canteen to get me a tuna sandwich as I'd had nothing to eat for 36 hours. It was thoughtful, but didn't hit the spot in quite the same way.

I had toast and jam and tea from both Maidstone and Pembury hospitals (both NHS).
It was LOVELY!!!!

BoffinMum · 04/01/2009 21:34

Had lots of NHS toast freely proffered by mws, and quite edible sarnies too, plus was even offered an NHS sarnie and cup of tea for myself when helping DH in A and E, plus access to parents' kitchen and full toast making provision when helping DS2 settle on children's ward. There is nothing like a bit of toast in times of trial.

tea and toast both times straight after birth at St George's in London

God, I LOVED the food there, I was soooo hungry the whole time - mmmmm

ClarissimoUsedToBePeachy · 04/01/2009 21:36

NHS toast here as well, although I was being sick into a bucket and so DH scoffed it and drank the tea but it was offered...

potoroo · 04/01/2009 21:53

Tea and toast at Swindon (NHS)... and after DS I also got a lovely washdown and clean NHS gown because I still had an epi in... bliss

Jbck · 04/01/2009 21:54

I don't drink tea & you'd have thought that was sacreligious. One mw presumed as I didn't drink tea, I didn't want my nightly toast! She got short shrift

Iwanttobeamillionaire · 04/01/2009 21:56

Toast here aswell!! And my hubby arrived half hour before the birth om my ds after being away for 6 weeks (he is in the army) and the midwife sent someone to make him some tea and toast as soon as he arrived - admittly he did look like death warmed up! Lovely midwives, fantastic NHS hospital!

Tillyscoutsmum · 04/01/2009 21:58

Tea and toast at Russell's Hall in West Mids It was with margarine though [ungrateful cow emoticon]

horsemadgal · 04/01/2009 21:58

Tea and buttered toast straight after giving birth.
After that it was help yourself breakfasts, cereal, rolls and jam. Still yummy though!

mosschops30 · 04/01/2009 21:59

We got tea and toast bought to us after I'd given birth.
Then breakfast was served off a trolley so woman ccoked toast in ward kitchen and bought it round with sloppy porridge and a selection of too hard to spread butter and crap jam

EyeballsintheSky · 04/01/2009 22:01

How come you lot got brekkie buffets and free access to the toaster? I got the miserable trolley woman round three times a day who glared at you if you dared to order anything, glared even more if, God forbid, you were tied up feeding your newborn and hadn't had time to tick the sheet and then gave out to me because I was only ordering sandwiches for lunch (which I didn't even want) and she thought I should have soup as well. I'm not exactly a skinny minnie either so could suffer the loss of calories

hazeyjane · 04/01/2009 22:01

With dd1 I was given one slice of toast dry with nothing on! Fortunately dh had made an entire loaf of bread into jam sandwiches, so I had enough to last me the 3 days I was in for

cmotdibbler · 04/01/2009 22:02

I got nothing. And in fact, due to the fact that I am coeliac and the postnatal ward required that you went to the kitchen and told them that you required a special meal an hour before each meal (for every meal), I didn't get a single meal for the week that I was in hospital as DS was in SCBU and I had more on my mind. Fortunatly SCBU had a fridge and a microwave, and DH went to M&S and got me food

Kafka · 04/01/2009 22:03

I got tea and toast at Kings in 2003, it was good.

I had the most delicious mince pie in the history of the world at the Kent and Canterbury hospital after dd was born. In fact I had 2, because dp was too tired and emotional to eat his!

ChippyMinton · 04/01/2009 22:04

Nothing after DS1 (emergency c-section). Another post cs mum kindly made my toast the next morning as I couldn't get out of bed.

After DS2 I got a full roast dinner and pudding!

After DD, I opted to stay in for the rest of the day in the hope of another roast dinner but only got a sandwich box

LadyOfWaffle · 04/01/2009 22:16

The tea and toast after DS was the best thing I ever tasted!

We were delivered tea with breakfast, mid morning, lunch, afternoon & after dinner.

Breakfast was english (fry up) with cereal and a roll and jam, or continental (danish pastry or croissent) with cereal and roll and jam. Mmm
