How many of you were sick during labour?

My lovely niece is choosing weather to train to become a midwife. She is really keen but is not good with sick at all. She feels that as she wants to do it so bad, she shouldn't let this phobia stop her. This is the only thing thats holding her back. Do you think she could cope?

I was sick the whole way through labour with DS1 and only afterwards with DS2. Its possibily something that she would get used to with time!

Botbot · 12/06/2008 09:24

Yep. Twice.

It was the gas and air what did it - didn't agree with me at all.

thequietone · 12/06/2008 09:24

It was the first thing I did as soon as DH wheeled me into the labour suite! It was quite spectacular!!! Please don't let this phobia stop her, though, as they're crying out for midwives in the UK. She may well be out of the room when/if the woman is sick. My midwife was...

All over the entrance to the hospital whilst I was wandering around trying to speed things along.....mind you it was after a particularly disgusting ham sandwich that I was given to "help keep my energy levels" up

calsworld · 12/06/2008 09:27

I wasn't good with sick at all but suffered with morning sickness all the way through - I'm fine with it now! I'd say she shouldn't let it stop her, and she may even get over her phobia at the same time.

(I was sick during my ecs - despite being given anti-nausea jab! luckily the anaesthetist heard me say i was going to be sick and told me to turn my head to the side, where he caught it in a bowl. YUK)

belgo · 12/06/2008 09:28

I vomited during my first labour (having suffered morning sickness through out the pregnancy!)

biglips · 12/06/2008 09:28

yep!...cos i had diamorphine to induce labour....was violently sick. i had 4 midwives mopping up after me on the ward and then was sick again outside the hosp.

not nice!!!

edam · 12/06/2008 09:29

Sick for about a day after labour as I'd had so much gas and air.

MrsTittleMouse · 12/06/2008 09:30

Oh dear. I was sick throughout my first stage and for over 12 hours after. Could she get used to it do you think? I'm would imagine that I'm unusual, but I know that my experience wasn't unique.

sophierosie · 12/06/2008 09:30

I was nearly sick on my midwife as soon as I got into to the delivery - she managed to jump out of the way just in time.

I imagine its something you just get used to dealing with and it is actually a minute part of the job.

She could think about hypnotherapy to help with her phobia.

belgo · 12/06/2008 09:31

how will she cope with other bodily fluids?

TheFallenMadonna · 12/06/2008 09:33

I was. Sorry.

ivyJkaty44 · 12/06/2008 09:33

I was - projectile all over the midwive

mostlyalurker · 12/06/2008 09:35

OMG,I feel sick reading this. I thought I might show her this thread to help her decide. I'm not sure now. I hope she can get over her phobia as she would be so good at it, she is very clever and has a lovely caring personality.

Can she spend a couple of days on a midwifery unit as work experience?

Or maybe even get a job as a midwife assistent?

CantSleepWontSleep · 12/06/2008 09:37

Yup - when I tried gas & air, several times.

i was sick when my waters broke. i think it is a reaction to the shock!

orangehead · 12/06/2008 09:44

Yep sick several times with ds1 but not with ds2. Is she ok with the poo?

TigerFeet · 12/06/2008 09:44

I was sick during labour - a reaction to pethidine

mostlyalurker · 12/06/2008 09:54

I think she is ok with all the other stuff. It's just the sick thing holding her back.

PeachyWontLieToYou · 12/06/2008 09:57

Yes (after with ds4, just after mw and doulal gone typically!)

Hypnotherapy?

hannahsaunt · 12/06/2008 10:12

I was sick after each of them (3) had been born.

gingeme · 12/06/2008 10:17

I am always sick about 10 mins before I get to the pushing stage .
Once shes in the throws of it all Im sure she won't notice. Hope she goes fot it. Good luck to her.

DumbledoresGirl · 12/06/2008 10:23

I wasn't sick in any of my 4 labours and I had all sorts of pain relief (spread between the 4 labours!) and practically survived on gas and air (which is the thing that seems to have made several people sick here). I didn't have any morning sickness either.

BUT, I do have a huge phobia of vomit and vomiting and would never go near midwifery or nursing or anything related for that very reason. I actually think without the phobia, nursing or midwifery might have been likely careers for me as I am that sort of person. If your neice is contemplating midwifery, I think she has to tell herself she will be confronted by vomit on a fairly regular basis.
