How many of you were sick during labour?

My lovely niece is choosing weather to train to become a midwife. She is really keen but is not good with sick at all. She feels that as she wants to do it so bad, she shouldn't let this phobia stop her. This is the only thing thats holding her back. Do you think she could cope?

Ooh please tell me you have photos of that Aitch

AitchTwoCiao · 12/06/2008 11:43

i do not, but i vividly remember both dh and the midwife loudly singing Justin Timberlake songs while i suffered...

Flamesparrow · 12/06/2008 11:46

lol

cmotdibbler · 12/06/2008 11:54

I was sick through every contraction until I was around 6 cm and someone noticed me labouring, took me to the delivery suite and gave me gas and air. No vomiting then until after I'd delivered the placenta, and then chucked copiously.

Has she tried CBT ? If she'd really like to be a mw, then it would be worth paying for some to try and overcome it.

Shitemum · 12/06/2008 11:57

I was sick during transition with DD1 but not sick with DD2.

WindUpBird · 12/06/2008 12:59

My first labour I was sick all over DH and the floor while waiting for midwives to ascertain whether I was actually in labour...
Second labour I was sick at the start of the second stage, all over the pillow I was leaning against face down. Didn't care about the sick so I eased DS into the world with my face lying in regurgitated thai takeaway.

All over the reception area of the delivery suite - I did warn them! and at least once more during labour. Possibly having big dish of pasta in early stages of labour wasn't a good idea. I'm sure she'll get used to it though...

Anna8888 · 12/06/2008 13:22

Was sick just after giving birth.

lulumama · 12/06/2008 13:24

i would recommend your niece has some help with her phobia, there are a lot of bodily fluids involved in labour!
a lot of women are sick, due to gas & air or having opiates. some are just sick anyway. so she needs to take steps to address her phobia as odds are, many of her ladies will be sick near or on her.

bythepowerofgreyskull · 12/06/2008 13:25

I was sick every time I ate something during my first labour,
2nd labour I wasn't sick at all but it was much faster.

LynetteScavo · 12/06/2008 13:27

I was sick only once with DS2 and DD, but repeatedly with DS1 - but it was only bile. -I was amazed how much bile my body could produce.

Why does no one tell you you will probably be sick when you're pregnant?

madamez · 12/06/2008 13:28

I was sick too - one puff of gas and air and ooops!
SHe should look into ways of curing the phobia as it's a horrible one to have to deal with anyway. And it would be such a shame to have to give up on a career she wants.

milfAKAmonkeymonkeymoomoo · 12/06/2008 14:03

I don't know anyone who was sick in labour including me (yet!), not sure how common it is.

belgo · 12/06/2008 14:05

milf - I'm not sure it's something most women would admit to in RL. I'm sure I've never told anyone in RL. It's just never come up in conversation!

AitchTwoCiao · 12/06/2008 14:18

yes lynette, it was bile in my case too. who knew there was that much bile in me? (do NOT answer that.)

Olipop · 12/06/2008 14:18

I was sick when I moved from the labour ward to the delivery room...but I did it in the sink and they were all laughing because in my pain soaked haze I was asking for some bleach and was trying to rinse it away and clean it all up with paper towels...they just said...leave it and go and push that baby out!!!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 12/06/2008 14:19

I was sick whilst in labour with ds1, over the side of the pool luckily, but wasn't sick with ds2.
2nd time, i think i was too busy shouting and writhing.

Ilovebunting · 12/06/2008 14:21

I was sick everywhere, including all down me and in my shoes!! It is my biggest phobia-I tried to run out of the delivery suite because I couldn't cope with it at all-it was a total nightmare!

milfAKAmonkeymonkeymoomoo · 12/06/2008 14:21

Belgo - I take your point but have had graphic conversations with friends about poo-ing, moo-ing, swearing, stitches and all the rest! the only person I do recall being sick was induced.

Be interested to know what the stats are and what percentage of women are sick in labour.

Swedes · 12/06/2008 14:25

I was sick at the transition stage. I was told it was quite normal.

being sick is actually quite helpful, as you cannot tense up when you are sick and it can help you dilate'

don;t drink anything acidic in early labour, torture when it comes back up

philmassive · 12/06/2008 14:28

Once and only once. Cadbury's cream egg. Can't look at them the same now.

belgo · 12/06/2008 15:37

Dh complained that I was sick as he was trying to eat his breakfast at the time - my heart bleeds for him|grin]
