More possible homebirth problems

seems a few threads on this atm...

ok my story is that I am not particularly committed to a homebirth (not convinced I actually want one tbh), however I do want the option of labouring at home and possibly delivering if all going well and I feel comfortable etc

have explained this to midwife who says fine fine fine no problems, if that's what you want we can book you in

I have said each time I see her yes I do want to be booked in. She has said right we'll do it, blah blah etc

it is just dawning on me that I am now not going to see her again until I am 37+ weeks and she has not booked me in or done any kind of check or assessment or whatever I hear they like to do when you are having a HB

am I being fobbed off? is this usual?

she also hasn't been through any information with me about bfing, which it states in my notes she must do by a certain time (I am well past the certain time)

what's up? is she just a bit laid back or am I missing out on stuff here?

you can buy a kiddies pool you now to give birth in ... this is the pool my friend gave birth in and I might buy it as well.

Thomcat · 08/06/2008 09:28

Hmmm well I'm in Pinner. Can't exactly nip it round. It weighs a tonne, I can't lift it. ??????? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ??????????

lulumama · 08/06/2008 09:30

thanks franny..

baby still has some room to move around and bob in and out of the pelvis. it is of course possible that baby turned, but just as likely he is still head down. a good way to tell, is to lie down flat and try to determine where the back of the baby is, and try to wiggle whichever round bit is at the bottom, heads wiggle, bottoms don;t!! i have no spacial awareness and cannot envisage where a baby is lying based on the kicks! when is your next MW appt

FrannyandZooey · 08/06/2008 12:44

belgo that's brilliant! how funny though...would Mickey Mouse not put you off your stride a bit though

TC Pinner...hmmm.....hmmmmm
very kind offer, probably can't take you up on it but you never know
perhaps something will occur to me

Lulu thank you, I have no spatial awareness either, and am not quite sure what you mean when you say "try to wiggle whichever round part is at the bottom"
at the bottom of where? sorry

belgo · 08/06/2008 13:54

yes my friend found mickey mouse a little bit off putting especially as she is very anti brands! I think they should have dolphins or something.

jamila169 · 08/06/2008 17:20

I had a more rounded version, with fishies on it, not sure I'd have wanted mickey keeping me company either!
Question for multips -did you find that you coped better with your second labour, but were worrying about it in advance more -i was thinking about it based on my experiences and also my experience of getting the odd smack when i was working - I found that I was carking it for weeks prior to my second labour, but when it happened, even though it was painful,it wasn't the end of the world, and no where near what my mind had built it up to, so all the anxiety melted away and i just got on with it. just like at work, when we knew someone was potentially violent, thinking 'if he kicks off he'll kill me' then being in a situation where you had to defuse an incident, getting in the firing line, and just carrying on cos it wasn't half as bad as you'd anticipated.
it's like your body is programmed to hype you up in anticipation, so when it happens,it's never as bad as you imagined, maybe that's why first timers often report being in total terror-their mind can't draw on experience and tell them -now then,it's not as bad as that

FrannyandZooey · 09/06/2008 14:54

right have spoken to midwife
she says 'you can't have a homebirth until you are at the END of your 37 weeks' (eg, 38 weeks )

belgo · 09/06/2008 16:42

That's interesting. I've been told no home birth before 37 weeks - not that I would want a home birth if the baby was born before then.

FrannyandZooey · 09/06/2008 17:50

why would you not be able to have a home birth before 38 weeks, though? no-one has ever mentioned this to me before, either with this pg or with ds

how would 37 full weeks be 38 weeks? [head spins]

why do I and most people I know in RL think 37 weeks is full term?

FrannyandZooey · 09/06/2008 18:35

yup I get it (I think)

but I am counting that way anyway
I mean I am saying 37 weeks when I have been pg for 37 full weeks, not when I am entering the 37th week

eg I have 4 weeks till my due date
I am now 36 weeks pg

yes?

or am I missing something

FrannyandZooey · 09/06/2008 18:35

and the midwife is saying I can't have a homebirth before I am 38 full weeks (I think)

ie 2 weeks before my due date

FrannyandZooey · 09/06/2008 18:47

btw reckon baby is right way up now
lots of kicks and stuff up the top

FrannyandZooey · 09/06/2008 19:19

shit I don't know what the hell we are saying now
I have always assumed that 37 weeks meant 37 full weeks
and that 40 weeks pg (due date) meant 40 full weeks
it seems insane to have it any other way - why would you say 40 weeks if you actually mean 39 weeks?

anyway...will speak to midwife next Monday and try to find out wtf is going on
god help me if I go into labour over weekend at only 37 full weeks

FrannyandZooey · 09/06/2008 19:24

ok have worked it out with a calendar
my LMP was 1st Oct
I am 37 full weeks pg on the 16th June (they are saying 13th June from the dating scan)
I am due on the 4th July when I will be 40 full weeks pg
I've counted it, that's how many weeks have passed, not starting the 40th week or anything

so I am now 36 full weeks pg
4 weeks till due date, when I will be 40 full weeks pg

tell me what I'm missing, PLEASE!

lulumama · 09/06/2008 19:26

sorry franny, i meant whichever round part is near the bottom of your bump, but seems baby is right way now !
