If you've had a c section..could you answer these for me?

anonny55 · 16/02/2025 22:04

I'm due my elective section in 10 days (first baby)
If you've had one please could you answer..

  • ahead of surgery, do I need to remove my lash extensions and gel polish nails?
  • how was the walk out of hospital when you left..it seems quite a long way to walk from the post natal ward to the car park in my hospital and I'm worried I'll struggle
  • what was required for you to be able to do before you could be discharged?
  • how was the first night (we aren't allowed birth partner to stay at my hospital) did you struggle to see to baby? Was the midwife's on hand to help?
  • if you was on the afternoon list, what time did you go down for your surgery? (I've been asked to arrive to the hospital at 12pm)
  • how long after the section did you have to get up and take your first walk? How was it? Any tips to make it easier?
  • what painkillers did you have post op? Was you sent home with any strong painkillers or just told to have paracetamol?
  • was it hard sitting on the toilet etc after to wee?
  • how long after section did you have your first shower and how did you find it?
  • how long after the section was you discharged?
  • what did you find the hardest of the whole experience?
Any tips to aid my recovery would be greatly appreciated too☺️

• ahead of surgery, do I need to remove my lash extensions and gel polish nails?

Yes to Nila, not sure about lashes
• how was the walk out of hospital when you left..it seems quite a long way to walk from the post natal ward to the car park in my hospital and I'm worried I'll struggle
Quite a way, I was fine, just a bit slow
• what was required for you to be able to do before you could be discharged?
I was walking and showering the next day (had baby at 10am) just struggled a bit with breast feeding
• how was the first night (we aren't allowed birth partner to stay at my hospital) did you struggle to see to baby? Was the midwife's on hand to help?
Nurses had to get the baby out of the cot and help me to get her latched. I had a catheter and hadn't walked at this point
• if you was on the afternoon list, what time did you go down for your surgery? (I've been asked to arrive to the hospital at 12pm)
Mine was morning - it's probably hard to say because there could be emergencies
• how long after the section did you have to get up and take your first walk? How was it? Any tips to make it easier?
The next morning, it was ok - they gave me oramorph but I dint like it so had paracetamol and I think dicolfenic
• what painkillers did you have post op? Was you sent home with any strong painkillers or just told to have paracetamol?
Home just paracetamol/ ibuprofen
• was it hard sitting on the toilet etc after to wee?
No it was fine
• how long after section did you have your first shower and how did you find it?
The next morning, it was fine except when I dropped the shower gel, it was a bit tricky to pick it up!
• how long after the section was you discharged?
3 days
• what did you find the hardest of the whole experience?
The lack of rest in a busy hospital, having to get up to make myself a bee and fetch my dinner from the trolly. Once I got home there was a lot more help

Good luck, I hope all goes well for you!

wooliegloves · 16/02/2025 22:11

don't know as don't wear either.
hard, I kinda hobbled
from memory they looked at me and said I was good to go, was discharged the next morning after I could wee
baby was in cot next to me but had a private room and DH stayed over.
went in in the morning, waited a bit.
I can't remember, fairly quickly I think.
Not given any painkillers, was offered paracetamol but had my own.
didn't struggle to wee.
Naively I didn't expect much pain or discomfort and was quite shocked compared to my VB. Found it very difficult adjusting to the fact I couldn't move my body freely if that makes sense.
Good luck.

  • ahead of surgery, do I need to remove my lash extensions and gel polish nails?
i wouldn’t think so
  • how was the walk out of hospital when you left..it seems quite a long way to walk from the post natal ward to the car park in my hospital and I'm worried I'll struggle
it was absolutely fine, assume partner/husband will be there to carry baby out
  • what was required for you to be able to do before you could be discharged?
nothing for me, just that baby was feeding, I think I had to show I’d done a big wee
  • how was the first night (we aren't allowed birth partner to stay at my hospital) did you struggle to see to baby? Was the midwife's on hand to help?
no issues, baby born 7pm so was alone quite early on, baby is typically just sleepy first night. Buzzed to call midwife when I needed help with feeding
  • if you was on the afternoon list, what time did you go down for your surgery? (I've been asked to arrive to the hospital at 12pm)
emergency C-section so no advice
  • how long after the section did you have to get up and take your first walk? How was it? Any tips to make it easier?
7pm section, as soon as catheter was out in the morning I got up
  • what painkillers did you have post op? Was you sent home with any strong painkillers or just told to have paracetamol?
they send you home with a goodie bag, just keep ontop of it. I did have to inject blood thinners into my leg once a day but that was fine
  • was it hard sitting on the toilet etc after to wee?
nope, first poo felt abit weird
  • how long after section did you have your first shower and how did you find it?
next day in the evening, they just look at the area first
  • how long after the section was you discharged?
3 days but that was due to baby feeding
  • what did you find the hardest of the whole experience?
not being able to drive for 6 weeks, also was very nervous to jump

best of luck!

wooliegloves · 16/02/2025 22:12

My shower was the next morning in hospital & I also dropped the shower gel 🤬

wooliegloves · 16/02/2025 22:15

I was also surprised that different trusts have different policies eg some keep you in more than 1 night and give stronger painkillers, my didn't 😆

Thisismeme · 16/02/2025 22:16

I haven’t got time to answer them all but my trust give stronger painkillers. I had oramorph in hospital and when home for first few days. I also didn’t walk to the car but went in a wheelchair, it really was too far to walk. It took me a few weeks to walk any decent distance due to pain

pearbottomjeans · 16/02/2025 22:17
  • ahead of surgery, do I need to remove my lash extensions and gel polish nails? yes
  • how was the walk out of hospital when you left..it seems quite a long way to walk from the post natal ward to the car park in my hospital and I'm worried I'll struggle totally fine. Never understand why postnatal ward is so far away from car park though!
  • what was required for you to be able to do before you could be discharged? me wee, baby feed
  • how was the first night (we aren't allowed birth partner to stay at my hospital) did you struggle to see to baby? Was the midwife's on hand to help? first ELCS I had 1:1 midwife due to complications. Second ELCS was fine, I just had the baby in the bed with me - not meant to but no one said anything, 3rd kid so they let me get on with a lot generally
  • if you was on the afternoon list, what time did you go down for your surgery? (I've been asked to arrive to the hospital at 12pm) n/a for me
  • how long after the section did you have to get up and take your first walk? How was it? Any tips to make it easier? n/a for first due to complications, walked 6hrs after second ELCS
  • what painkillers did you have post op? Was you sent home with any strong painkillers or just told to have paracetamol? lots, can’t remember what
  • was it hard sitting on the toilet etc after to wee? no
  • how long after section did you have your first shower and how did you find it? second ELCS, 6 hours ish, lush!
  • how long after the section was you discharged? stayed in 1 night with second ELCS - born 10am ish, home 4ish the next day
  • what did you find the hardest of the whole experience? first ELCS I lost half my blood and ended up developing and autoimmune disease from the trauma, so that really! But unlikely to happen to you. Second ELCS was 100% positive, absolutely loved it

Drove 4 weeks after both (even first ELCS) which was totally fine.

anonhop · 16/02/2025 22:19
  • not sure about nails
  • my walk was really long & I really struggled ngl
  • go to the toilet, feed, manage blood sugars for diabetes etc
  • first night was hard- I couldn't lift or get to baby who was screaming as hungry but nobody would come & help/ get baby for me. It was so hot (heating on in ward while 30° outside, no fans) was incredibly faint & sweating. Men everywhere, nurses leaving curtains open while feeding, bleeding etc. Just miserable!
  • 1st walk horrific, build up slowly!
  • was meant to be sent home with codeine but they didn't & then said they had so I only had paracetamol. INSIST ON CODEINE OR A STRONG PAINKILLER

Tips are to have someone around for minimum 2 weeks (preference 4). Stay mostly in bed. Follow all the advice 1000%. Keep on top of painkillers

They said to have either nails
or toe nails varnish free. They will likely use a monitor on your finger. So possibly…

They let the other parent drive right up to the door near the mat block at my hospital. I couldn’t have walked anywhere. You can only have the car there for a few minutes.

discharge - baby breastfeeding ok. Mum needs to say you can wee and pass wind!

mine was 9am. Didn’t wait at all.

I didn’t get out of bed until the next morning with either section. It was pretty hard I’ll be honest. Just getting on and off the bed is hard.

I was given dihydrocodeine. Fine to Bf on. Really helped alongside paracetomol and ibuprofen. Make sure they give you something like that as those normal ones aren’t enough.

yes felt like I needed to lower myself onto the loo! Gets easier after a couple of days.

Had a shower a couple of days later. First section was discharged after 2 nights. Second one the next day -which was better. Second time my partner was able to stay in a private room which helped. First time he couldn’t and I had to just keep pressing the buzzer for help.

The worst was sleep deprivation the first time. Getting home as soon as I could made it much easier the second time.

my second baby I was driving after 2 weeks. Recovered quicker than first. Think first was a bit of a shock!

anonhop · 16/02/2025 22:19

Sorry to be negative! But my experience was horrific with pain. Each is different xx

Pinkypup · 16/02/2025 22:23

💯 remove nail polish. Lashes should be fine.

Rumpapapum · 16/02/2025 22:23

First walk was horrible, go slowly and make sure DH carries everything. It helped me to have a tight top under lose jumper as felt it was holding everything in. Get massive pants. I needed ones that would go over my scar or it was sore. That was my biggest issue immediately after and had to send my mum out to buy some.
First night was hard because you need nurses to pass you the baby and when baby is crying and no one is answering buzzer it feels like eternity. Get to know people on your ward, as the mum opposite me had a vaginal birth and massively helped me out there!
the hardest bit for me was not being able to wash my own hair after birth.
I had a morning appointment but was told to arrive at 7 and she was born at 11. It is very sore after so make sure everyone is aware of that. I yhink people are sensitive because they don’t want to scare you, but it just underprepares you and I don’t think we need to patronise women. Baby needs to come out! Take the oramorph and set a timer for painkillers alternating every 2 hrs for the first few nights. Good luck.

Rumpapapum · 16/02/2025 22:25

Oh and if you take codeine, take some sort of laxative. Believe me you do not want to be constipated!

anonny55 · 16/02/2025 22:26

wooliegloves · 16/02/2025 22:15

Mine is typically 1 night for a planned section if all goes well. My midwife couldn't advise me about the painkillers which probably means I'll get f all but a paracetamol 😂😂

  • ahead of surgery, do I need to remove my lash extensions and gel polish nails?
Yes for nails, unsure about lashes!
  • how was the walk out of hospital when you left..it seems quite a long way to walk from the post natal ward to the car park in my hospital and I'm worried I'll struggle
The walk was quite far for me too but was fine, just took it slowly.
  • what was required for you to be able to do before you could be discharged?
Made sure I had a wee and baby was feeding
  • how was the first night (we aren't allowed birth partner to stay at my hospital) did you struggle to see to baby? Was the midwife's on hand to helP
It was lovely! The midwifes there were amazing, one spent ages with me supporting with breast feeding. There was always someone there to help.
  • if you was on the afternoon list, what time did you go down for your surgery? (I've been asked to arrive to the hospital at 12pm)
I was afternoon, had to be there for 11am and DD was born at 4.50pm
  • how long after the section did you have to get up and take your first walk? How was it? Any tips to make it easier?
It was the next morning around 6.30am when they took catheter out. I waz ready go get up and walk just take it steady.
  • what painkillers did you have post op? Was you sent home with any strong painkillers or just told to have paracetamol?
Just paracetamol! Although on top of this I was severely anemic so even though not painkillers I had those
  • was it hard sitting on the toilet etc after to wee?
Yes but I think its fear too!
  • how long after section did you have your first shower and how did you find it?
When I got home, it was fine!
  • how long after the section was you discharged?
I was discharged 24 hours after delivery
  • what did you find the hardest of the whole experience?
I was a FTM so was nervous when dad left for night! I just wanted to get home and start our lives as a 3!
Babyboomtastic · 16/02/2025 22:28

1) ahead of surgery, do I need to remove my lash extensions and gel polish nails?
I can't see why you'd need to remove the lashes, but probably the nail varnish as they put a monitor on your finger and sometimes it can interfere with them.

2) how was the walk out of hospital when you left..it seems quite a long way to walk from the post natal ward to the car park in my hospital and I'm worried I'll struggle
We have a maternity car park nearby and that was absolutely fine. I don't know how I'd have been if it was the main car park, but I was mobile enough to contemplate Tesco's on the way home (we didn't, but went the next morning!) and that was fine.

3) what was required for you to be able to do before you could be discharged? Have a pee, feel well enough, baby have checks. There wasn't a specific list tbh

4) how was the first night (we aren't allowed birth partner to stay at my hospital) did you struggle to see to baby? Was the midwife's on hand to help?
this was the case with my first. It was fine, a lovely time just the two of us. My call bell was answered very quickly each time and the nurses were helpful (offering to do the nappies rather than just passing baby etc).

5) if you was on the afternoon list, what time did you go down for your surgery? (I've been asked to arrive to the hospital at 12pm)
I was morning list both times, arriving at 8. Babies born roughly 10 and 11am.

6) how long after the section did you have to get up and take your first walk? How was it? Any tips to make it easier?
both times not until the next morning. They didn't rush me. It felt painful getting up the first time but every time got better. It felt like I'd been zipped together. Standing up straight felt weird but was better. Oh, and remember that lochia exists and when you get up, gravity might have an effect 🫣

7) what painkillers did you have post op? Was you sent home with any strong painkillers or just told to have paracetamol?
paracetamol, ibuprofen and a couple of doses of oramorph. I just said yes whenever they came along, and I had very little pain. Make sure they aren't late though, because it did hurt when they were late getting me a dose (period pain type hurt, not agonisingly bad or anything). I was sent home with coedine because I asked for it, it's not done unless on request. I wanted to make sure any pain stayed under control. I used it for a few days at home sparingly, along with ibuprofen and paracetamol and had zero pain.

8) was it hard sitting on the toilet etc after to wee?
No, but the second time my wee didn't want to come and that was tricky. Eventually it did, and that was fine.

9) how long after section did you have your first shower and how did you find it?
next morning. Comedically bad, but not for the reasons you'd expect. I hadn't realised the shower head was facing the wall, so when I turned it on the (still icy cold) showerhead spun round and soaked me unexpectedly with freezing water. It turns out you can literally jump in the air 24hrs after a section. That hurt for a few minutes afterwards, but my sides also hurt from laughing. No harm done though in hindsight it would have been sensible to get someone to check my stitches just in case. Second baby it was fine, no drama had a pleasant shower.

10) how long after the section was you discharged?
Both times I was offered discharge at 24hrs but told I could stay and extra night if I wanted to, which I did as it just felt right rather than rushing home.

11) what did you find the hardest of the whole experience?
First baby - the cannula initially and trapped gas pain (peppermint water is your friend! I burped and farted my way to feeling better)
Second baby - afterpains were a bit ouch and the trapped gas again.

All in all, both fabulous deliveries with amazing memories and very little pain.

Enjoy meeting your baby relatively pain free, not exhausted, and probably with hair and make up intact 😁

Take lots of photos.

IntermittentStream · 16/02/2025 22:29

I discharged myself early, because by far the most difficult part of it was the hellishly hot postnatal ward. I walked within a few hours, and I was fine. The only thing that was painful for weeks afterwards was getting up from a low chair or bed, and stepping over the edge of a bath (in fact, I wasn’t able to do that at all, which was awkward as our only shower was over the bath.) My first shower the next morning. It was fine. Yes, the first night was hard. No, no help available, and DS cried the whole night unless I held him, so I sat up all night with him in my arms. In fairness, I wouldn’t have trusted anyone with him, but there was little help.

I wouldn’t get hung up on timings.i was first on the day’s schedule, but a couple of emergency CSs meant I kept getting bumped back. The surgery itself was painless though very surreal. I’ll never forget my first sight of DS appearing over the curtain, roaring.😀

wooliegloves · 16/02/2025 22:31

@anonny55 sounds like it! I did think there was something wrong with me as loads of MNs said they had no pain but I didn't realise some are discharged later and had stronger painkillers. I checked in with a friend who is a surgeon and also had a CS, she reassured me. 😆

wooliegloves · 16/02/2025 22:33

After 2 weeks I felt more normal and didn't really have pain or discomfort getting up from sleeping etc but those first few days 😱

SingingWaffleDoggy · 16/02/2025 22:33

My ELCS was waaaaaaaay better than my first natural birth.
Was in first thing. Catheter out at 4pm ish and had to walk out to the toilet from then on. It wasn’t very nice the first time but got easier.
Had DD in the cot next to the bed overnight and could just about get her in and out myself. The worst part was the trapped wind in my shoulder.
Showered at 9am when DH was allowed back in, doctors ward round at 10 and home by lunchtime.
Didn’t get given any painkiller meds to come home with so stock up on paracetamol and dihidrocodeine, and ibuprofen. The good thing about the nerve damage is that you can’t feel the daily injections if you choose the spot wisely!
Take a long phone charger as it plugs in behind the bed, slip on shoes and something to flavour the water with as the room temp jugs are not particularly appealing and you’ll need to stay hydrated

anonny55 · 16/02/2025 22:33

@anonhop was yours elective! Doesn't sound great🫣
DH has 6 weeks off work and I've hired my sister to stay over for 4 weeks so hoping with plenty of help it'll be okay
I think I'll struggle with the no driving for 6 weeks but DH drives so it's not the end of the world!
I have codeine at home that was prescribed for my awful pregnancy headaches so if I'm sent home with nothing I'll have those to rely on atleast😅

OP posts:
Beamur · 16/02/2025 22:33

My feet were very swollen - bring sliders
First poo was so traumatic I still feel cold thinking about it nearly 18 years later! Hold a clean hand towel over the area and make sure you drink lots of water/orange juice. Get some lactose in.
Other than that was up and about surprisingly early and easily. Couldn't sit up without help for a while though.

WanderingDreamingSpires · 16/02/2025 22:38

Lots of good advice but to add my two cents: it's good to try and move asap. It really does help recovery and it also helps prevent blood clots. And take a shot of lactose before the section, I got a shot of codeine in theatre and it bunged me up for days, until I got home.

The no driving for 6 weeks thing is a myth! Virtually all insurers let you drive when you feel well enough. Lots are driving after 1-3 weeks.

You definitely don't need your sister and your husband there to help (or both sequentially). It's lovely to have them both there, but the most you are going to need realistically is 1 person, for a couple of weeks (at most) unless there are complications.

Check the codiene is compatible with BF if you are intending on doing so. I mixed fed initially so was careful with my timings but some are more compatible than others.
