I'd say it was possible, you have loadsa time, just have an agreement that if you change your mind at the last minute, she isn't allowed to take it personally!

VictorianSqualor · 20/04/2008 14:14

Starlight have you thought about asking on here for someone who would be willing to be a birthing partner?
I know if someone was near me I'd happily leanr everything they wanted and do it for them.

Nosnik · 20/04/2008 14:16

Are you planning a home birth starlight?

I'm in Oxford starlight, but I'm sure there must be someone close!
There has to be! this is MN! solution to ALL problems!

Nosnik · 20/04/2008 14:21

I was planning hb but got talked out of it by scary consultant who said I would be at risk of big bleed due to big baby and excess fluid.

ImightbeLulumama · 20/04/2008 14:22

nosnik, it sounds like your baby is settling deeper into your pelvis, and moving around to get ready fro birth

www.spinningbabies.com is a good site , if your baby is not in teh best position, to move him/her

if your baby is back to back, try to sit on a birth ball as much as possible, and avoid labouring lying on your back , which is not that great anyway

starlight, i thikn you need to take a step back and stop obsessing !!! you have 5 months to get sorted, new doulas are starting out all teh time, and you are bound to find someone

also, bear in mind, the benefits of a doula are immense and have been proven to be very useful, BUT, it is not a cast iron guarantee that things will go exactly as you write in your birth plan

she is there, whoever she is, whether, friend, mum, doula , whoever, to empower and support you and your DH into having a more positive birth experience this time

i still maintain that for you a homebirth , with the ability to move and vocalise as you wish would be a great benefit to you

I'm still not convinced but DP has got scared and MW's said she not comfortable with it either as some MW's are not as experienced as others.

Nosnik · 20/04/2008 14:25

I'm ok about it, I'm def having HB nextt time. Although this is my 2nd preg its DP's 1st so I have taken pity on him!

Nosnik · 20/04/2008 14:26

Thanks Lulu

ImightbeLulumama · 20/04/2008 14:26

speak to supervisor of MWs. not your problme if mWs not experienced enough speak to www.aims.org,uk your right to have a HB if you are making an informed decision to do so!

I know I could pursue it, but I haven't got energy now!! I will next time, I have just got so fed up over the whole thing that it has drained me!! Just looking forward to the birth now, and to sticking my fingers up at the consultant who reckons I'll struggle, I'm hardcore, 11lber or not I'll have this baby out in no time once he/she is ready to do his/her bit!

Nosnik · 20/04/2008 14:35

my MW said that she would be happy to attend personally but would be worried that if a less experienced MW were to get out of her depth. I don't really get it, how can you choose to have a HB if you haven't got 100% faith in MW? I feel like they took the choice away personally.

ImightbeLulumama · 20/04/2008 14:36

how ridicolous

All MWs should be comepetent for a home delivery, and if not, then they should be sent for training by their manager etx..not good enough for women to be told they can not have the birth they want as teh MW is not competent.

it is worth contacting AIMS, even if you don;t have a HB as they collate this sort of thing and use the information for campaigning for better maternity care

ImightbeLulumama · 20/04/2008 14:37

i have to go in a minute, so catch up with you all soon x

dizzydixies · 20/04/2008 14:38

starlight, shoulders can throw up problems too, not just the head

Nosnik · 20/04/2008 14:39

I've kept a diary lulu, and started to compose a letter to the trust and the consultant. I'll have a look at AIMS too.

Starlight..........head is above 97th too! But I'm still not scared! DS1's head was 90th and he had his hand up so that makes up the other few cms!

dizzydixies · 20/04/2008 14:44

nosnik, what size was your first, sorry if I've missed it

Nosnik · 20/04/2008 14:46

9lb 2oz, DS's dad 5' 8" and this baby's dad 6'3". The estimated weight by scan at 36 weeks was 8lb 3oz

Nosnik · 20/04/2008 14:47

Shoulder dystocia was another high risk factor that they warned me about, but once you get that far what can they do in hospital that they can't do at home?

dizzydixies · 20/04/2008 14:49

oh nosnik am feeling your worry

dd1 was 10lb4 with terrible shoulder dystocia

dd2 was 11lb1oz and eventual CS

they won't even consider me for a home birth and trying to consider all options
