im ashamed to say that yes i did poo when pushing my daughter out which i might add was simply mortifying!!!.im gonna say it was beacause my daughter was in the back to back posistion (just to make myself feel better )but the truth of the matter is when your told to push as though your doing a poo its inevitable that its gonna happen.ooh the shame

I spent most of my labour asking the midwife if I'd done a poo because the pressure at the bottom of my back made it felt as though I was pooing constantly! She kept saying no, but then I definitely felt one come out - and made a big deal of telling her and apologising profusely. She just changed the subject and it was never mentioned again! So I'm assuming I did but it has never been confirmed!

Ambi · 11/04/2008 12:08

Mercy I overdid the gas and air

iwouldgoouttonight · 11/04/2008 12:09

Bumperlicious - I tore a bit and there was loads of blood too, much more than I think would come from the tear. So I'm assuming loads of blood (well gunk that looks like blood) comes out anyway.

JODIEhavingababy · 11/04/2008 12:10

Iwouldgoouttonight, that's what my midwife keot saying to me, Every five minutes it would be, 'have I pooed' her - 'no it's just the head' load of crap!! (pardon the pun

lulumama · 11/04/2008 12:10

there is blood whether you tear or not, and fluid and poo and alsorts

please, please, please don;t anyone feel ashamed if you poo whilst you are giving birth. the MW will just whip it away before you notice. and no-one will point it out! it is NORMAL and often poo is a good signal baby is imminent. please don;t feel embarrased.

some blood loss is normal when you give birth, around 200 mls or so IIRC. not sure exactly where it comes from during birth... maybe one of the lovely MN MWs can explain?

some women do bleed as a sign of dilation IIRC, but not gushing blood.

PuhPeng · 11/04/2008 12:10

My midwife told me to push.
I refused, saying if I pushed I would poo!
She agreed that I might poo, but I had to push anyway and she promised me that if I pooed I wouldn't know and she wouldn't mention it.

So I pushed. And pooed.

I tell people I have absolutely no idea if I pooed or not, but the truth is there was a very pooey smell at one point.

ROSEgarden · 11/04/2008 12:10

i peed like a racehorse!!!..no poo's though!

foxythesnowfox · 11/04/2008 12:12

Good God yes, every time. There is no dignity in childbirth.

Yes Bumper, I too didn't tear and there was blood. I have no idea where it comes from, and frankly I don't care. I am firmly up the top end and turning a blind eye to any of that mucky down-below business.

onepieceoflollipop · 11/04/2008 12:16

Reassuring and reasonable words from Lulu as usual.

I think I did - but honestly it doesn't worry me. The midwife was lovely and I'm sure had seen all kinds of things many many times. It is just so natural, giving birth (for many of us)can feel a bit like pooing (but significantly more so iyswim).

On the actual day there is so much more to think about/worry about, honestly.

sweetkitty · 11/04/2008 12:17

I was in so much pain that I don't think I would have cared if a crocodile had shot out my bum, honestly it's push as hard as you can, get the baby out and stop the pain.

I have pooed twice in labour DP told me afterwards, the last time he actually cleaned it up. He said it didn't bother him one bit after all there was a baby coming out my fanjo at the time.

Funny thing was after it was all over I got up and had a wee in the en-suite toilet and the MWs were still in the bedroom tidying up and I shut the door as I didn't want them to see me weeing!

MegSophandEmma · 11/04/2008 12:18

I was assured by exh that didn't during labour with DD1 but I do rememeber shouting "i'm pooooing I'm pooooing"

PuhPeng · 11/04/2008 12:21

Lol @ kitty closing the door to pee.

That's like when you have a smear test and carefully hide your knickers inside your folded up trousers because God FORBID anyone see your knickers. Erm, just before they delve into your fanjo...

ItsNotYouItsMe · 11/04/2008 12:23

I don't know if I pooed. I was dying to ask afterwards but couldn't quite find my nerve! I'm going to have to dig out my notes now.

VictorianSqualor · 11/04/2008 12:23

I did that when the midwife came to give me a sweep last week, hid my knickers that is.
Isn't that just normal?

JODIEhavingababy · 11/04/2008 12:26

Knicker hiding is normal, at least I hope it is!

JODIEhavingababy · 11/04/2008 12:26

Just as normal as having a poo when tryingto have a baby!

sweetkitty · 11/04/2008 12:29

Or seeing the MW who gave you a membrane sweep (aka trying to pull your tonsils out your fanjo) in the supermarket the day after and thinking ergh her hands have been where?

PuhPeng · 11/04/2008 12:30

Oh, it's normal. Everyone does it. But I always wonder why I'm being so coy about my M&S briefs when I'm shortly going to be splaying my knees like a frog, vajayjay akimbo.

becklespeckle · 11/04/2008 12:32

Didn't with the DSs - they were spontanious labours which had been preceeded by a good clear out a few days before but did with DD who was induced (no clear out) - was horribly embarrassed and kept apologising

devonsmummy · 11/04/2008 12:38

It was a big fear of mine that I would poo whilst giving birth.

So on the Sunday ( a week before due date)went out for a roast and loaded up on veg - I thought I must up the vegetable intake to make sure I'm regular before the birth.

Well didn't go on Sunday and waters broke at 3.30am Monday so off to hospital I go.

Had to stay in as BP was high - started to get what I thought were very early contractions and just sat breathing through them.

Then I had an urge to pee every five minutes so was up and down to the loo.

Thank god i thought - I need to poo so back to bathroom. Well I thought that's definately cleared me out!!

Got back to my bed and felt a big contraction and pooed!! I was mortified as i was on the ward not in a birthing suite.

I think I've pooed I said to the midwife - No that's usual to feel that way she said as she popped her head under the sheet.

Oh - yes you have! as I was wheeled through the ward.

DH delighted in telling EVERYONE that I pooed myself.

I'm just glad it didn't get filmed as we had planned!!!!

bogie · 11/04/2008 12:48

I did but i didn't notice I only found out because my cousin who was there for the birth shouted to me you just pooed

Blocky · 11/04/2008 13:59

I pooed in the birthing pool, MW could'nt find the net thing to fish it out and had to use a jug!
I blame my MW, who advised me to load up on carbs, so prior to going into labour I'd had a huge roast dinner early evening, then ate two bread rolls while in early labour.

Its just a normal bodily function. I recall being a bit apprehensive about if I did poo - was told by MW that I have to clear my bowels before the baby would come out! Don't know if she was telling me this to get rid of any embarrassment on my part......

mom2latinoboys · 11/04/2008 14:03

I did with ds1 not with ds2.

jingleyjen · 11/04/2008 14:04

yup both times got floaters in the birthing pool

EyeballsintheSky · 11/04/2008 17:56

DH had to wipe my backside...twice!

And I vaguely remember the MW changing the mat underneath me about three times as well. Looking back I'm mortified but d'you know what? At the time I couldn't have given a tuppeny toss, and I really never thought I'd say that!
