Big baby, GD, they won’t induce until 41+6

3 days overdue with my 4th baby. This in itself has been a new experience as my others all came at 39 weeks so mentally I’ve been preparing to have this baby for weeks now!

I’ve got GD, diet managed, and despite a scan a month ago showing baby looked smaller than my others (biggest was 10lbs at birth a week early) there was an expectation that he would come early too.

my Midwife is very laid back and has said they won’t do an induction until 41+6. I’m really worried and anxious about the effect on the baby- his size, the GD etc and can’t understand why they’d wait so long (having read a lot it’s usual with GD to induce around 40 weeks) her opinion was I’ve done it before so I’ll do it again in relation to birthing a bigger baby…yes but I’ve never gone this far on before or had full blown GD! I did say I wasn’t happy about it but maybe should have pushed more. This is NHS and I have a second sweep tomorrow. Should I be asking to speak to an obstetrician? Make more of a fuss? It’s against my nature to do so but 41+6 (and likely it will be in the days after that if they’re busy) just seems too long with the factors at play.

Just to say I have GD and am 39 weeks. I have an induction booked for due date, and 2 sweeps this week. Baby is not measuring particularly big and the GD is well controlled by diet (at the moment). The doctor I saw said that they are happy to go to 40 + 3 or 4 if diet controlled. But where I am, due date inductions seem to be the way to go (unless contra indicated and an early induction / section is needed)

Just an update- baby arrived at 11.01 this morning! 8lbs 4 so not so chunky! And bloods are good. Thank you for all your advice- for those interested I had emailed my midwife last night and her response was that only a Dr could authorise and earlier induction and that we could arrange a meeting…glad it didn’t come to that x

Wonderful news, congrats!

Congratulations on the latest addition to your family. TBH I would still write to her supervisor of midwives to express my concern as they have at least one midwife ignorant of or ignoring national guidance.

That’s amazing news! Congratulations and welcome to the world to your new baby!

GoT1904 · 30/01/2023 11:06

Awwwwwww congratulations!!!

Can I be a pain and ask how big they estimated your LO to be?? I'm only 36w but last scan had her at 8lb 3 already, if she keeps up how she's been going she'll be estimated at 10lbs at my 38w scan. I know they can be inaccurate xx

Mummybearto3bg · 30/01/2023 12:07

I'm not due until May but they've already set a date to have a sweep at 38 weeks and then induce at 39 weeks and that's purely for having a 10lb baby so definitely stand your ground how ever you need to. Good luck x
