Last meal before C-Section... what would you have?

Lighthearted or serious answers I'm open 😂

Trying to plan what would be a good last meal before surgery? Have to have my last meal no later than 10pm and probably won't eat again until the following afternoon.

I'm thinking something high carb to keep me full, DH suggested a takeaway but I'm scared it'll cause issues for the surgery and assuming it's probably better to have an actually nutritious meal right before a major op 🤷🏼‍♀️

Not much. Really healthy. High fibre.
Do not risk constipation after a section. Been there, done that by mistake and it was carnage.

Stick to salad, soups etc. I did that second time round, so much better.

Hangupsrus · 15/11/2022 14:58

Whatever you do op make sure it's a big one, I was booked for my section for the morning and it was pushed back until late evening due to emergency admissions coming in, never felt so hungry 🙈. I'd say go with a nice big take away, whatever is your favourite.

HowBerryPeachy · 15/11/2022 15:28

@megletthesecond I can't think of anything worse than salad or soup as a last meal for what could be 24 hours 😳 that wouldn't fill me up until breakfast time!
I think constipation is a given after a section anyway, my last one definitely came with that aftermath hence the Lactulose/Dulcoease taken afterwards.

@Hangupsrus a takeaway does sound good, I won't deny it!

I had a massive carb fest Chinese.

Chdjdn · 15/11/2022 15:29

I felt quite sick with nerves the night before and thinking about how uncomfortable a big meal is when heavily pregnant I had a normal dinner then some toast just before 10pm

PuttingDownRoots · 15/11/2022 15:30

Something that really needs two hands, like a steak. I ate so many meals one handed with a baby attached to me in the first few months....

stopbeeping · 15/11/2022 15:32

I only knew it was my last dinner before one of my c sections
I had a lovely Turkish takeaway of shish kebab chicken bulgar wheat salad etc baklava a glass of red wine and then I had a huge massive long shower
Spent the evening reminiscing

Other two times: too sick and ate fruit and cried
And the most recent
Didn't eat dinner I didn't feel myself

I only was hungry the time I knew I was having the section but even then baby was delivered by 920 am I was eating by 11 am

Best of luck!! Whatever you eat shouldn't make too much of a difference
I would have something with no tidying up though so you can be with your partner and hang out

Skinnermarink · 15/11/2022 15:32

We went to the local Italian. Butratta starter, Spaghetti carbonara, tirimisu and a small glass of very nice red wine.

And I am so glad I did because like a PP I also got pushed back to 4pm and had to beg the ward for a soggy sandwich at 7pm as i’d missed dinner. I had snacks but DH accidentally took the bag home with him 😩

FebMama · 15/11/2022 15:32

Watching with interest as planning an elective c section in Feb - unless baby has other ideas!

guidedbythelightt · 15/11/2022 15:33

I just had usual dinner at usual time. Both times. But I am probably a bit boring. Didn't even think to have a special meal.

LesClaypoolsHat · 15/11/2022 15:33

A roast!

HowBerryPeachy · 15/11/2022 15:37

@Skinnermarink omg I think I would've had a breakdown 😂 you poor thing! I hope mine doesn't get pushed back too late.

DH is a marathon runner so I applied similar logic to my last meal and wanted to carb load! I had a massive pasta dish with loads of cheese, sounds quite boring but it is a really decadent meal. Luckily I was first in for my section so only ended up missing breakfast! Good luck OP!

Anaemicandtired · 15/11/2022 15:40

Dates and prune juice for reasons mentioned above!

DPotter · 15/11/2022 15:42

I had a curry!

Skinnermarink · 15/11/2022 15:47

@HowBerryPeachy yes unfortunately the day of his son’s birth is slightly marred for DH by me demanding to know where the hell my Cornish crunchers and liquorice allsorts had gone 😅

megletthesecond · 15/11/2022 15:52

I had chips before my eventual emergency section and ended up tearing with an anal fissure. After 15 years of pain I'd have preferred to go very hungry for 48hrs. I always eat light before ops now.

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 15/11/2022 15:56

Large glass of red and a plateful of cheese. That baby is cooked!

Hospital food is horrific. Lots of fresh veg as you won't see any for days.

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 15/11/2022 16:03

Went to a Michelin starred restaurant in case I died in theatre (was paranoid)

username8888 · 15/11/2022 16:19

A nice cheese omelette, with some crusty bread and a small salad.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 15/11/2022 16:25

I went for a massive slap up lunch at a steakhouse - giant rare steak, all the trimmings, starter and dessert.

Then I had a bagel with smoked salmon right before I went to bed.

My section was bumped until 4pm though, so I was absolute ravenous by the time I was wheeled into surgery. It was rubbish. Then I came out late and missed dinner, so was just snacking on protein bars from my bag with DS scrunched under one arm.

Novella12 · 15/11/2022 16:41

I spent the day before making a massive and delicious lasagne, had it with garlic bread the night before. The big benefit was that the leftovers were waiting for me when I got home from hospital!

LetItGoToRuin · 15/11/2022 16:46

My C-section wasn't planned, but I fancy joining in anyway.

29 weeks pregnant. Had some spotting, so midwife advised me to pop in to be checked. Baby's heart rate plummeted so they whizzed me into theatre for an emergency C-section. Anaesthetist asked what I'd eaten - banana 2 hours ago - fine. C-section aborted as heart rate picked up. Admitted into hospital overnight on a glucose/insulin drip (gestational diabetic) as they wanted to get steroids into the baby's lungs.

Midwives told me I could eat what I liked whilst on this drip, so after two months of virtually starving to manage the diabetes, I ate two rounds of tea and toast and then DH popped out for a takeaway. At about 9pm we gorged on a fish and chip supper and diet coke in the hospital. I'd not eaten so much in weeks.

Midnight - I haemorrhaged. Emergency C-section actually happened that time, with general anaesthetic. Anaesthetist (the same one as earlier that day) went very pale when I told him what I'd just eaten...

Fortunately, no ill effects, but not recommended!

Magssss · 15/11/2022 16:59

This was me 3 weeks ago. Had a MASSIVE lasagne the night before my planned c section only to go into spontaneous labour after eating it! Ended up choosing a vbac instead and I’m sure that lasagne gave me the energy to get through!

MummyJ36 · 16/11/2022 12:33

I’m trying so hard to remember what I had but it’s a total blur! My mum was staying with us so she was making some lovely meals in the week leading up to it, stews, spaghetti bolognaise, soups etc. I’d recommend something carby and give yourself a treat too! Don’t stress too much about it unless you know it will definitely upset your stomach from past experience. I also drank so much water! I could drink water up until 6am and you best believe I glugged and glugged until the final minute! I then spent most of the time leading up the section going for a wee 😂
