Hi I’m getting towards end of pregnancy no.2 and am looking at some form of intervention before term.

Would really appreciate your experiences of the prostin pessary.

How intense? How painful? Did you need an epidural or other further intervention?

I want to be as informed as possible before I make my mind up which way to go and it seems to be more difficult to find info about this method.

TIA!

For a bit more info:

Birth no 1 was advised to have induction at term as baby was IVF and therefore apparent increase in stillborn chance.

Was v keen to avoid this as didn’t want all the extra that comes with. I wasn’t informed about prostin at the time and think all they were offering was the oxytocin drip.

In the end I had a couple of sweeps before due date and my waters broke too long before contractions so had to have monitoring and was bedbound. Ended up with epidural & forceps. DS in distress and unwell when born.

Want to avoid similar!!

I had this. So I was given the first at about 5am and it did nothing, was given another 6 hours later and got me to 3cm with no regular pains yet. We waiting for a slot on delivery before they could break my waters, this happened at 9.30pm when I was 3cm.
As soon as I stood up to walk back to my bed all hell broke loose. My contractions came thick and fast I don't remember any gaps inbetween them and my daughter was born at 11.50pm!

Only had time for gas and air and I needed an episiotomy (she was only 5lb 3oz too!). Unfortunately mine was complicated by a retained placenta which required manual removal in theatre under a spinal block.

I'm due in sept apt kind of going into it expecting the same again.

Just out of interest are you looking for induction because this is another IVF baby/ some other risk factor that requires induction?

as it sounds like you had a spontaneous rupture of membranes before term last time - I’m not an expert but I don’t think they would give you a prostin pessary if your waters had broken due to infection risk - happy to be corrected if this is wrong.

I had prostin with broken waters, it did nothing. I had to have an IV to get things going, I didn't have any analgesia.

@20viona sorrry to hear about your complications. When you say you were waiting for a slot on delivery, we’re you not able to deliver on the home from home type ward? This is what I’m hoping for!

@lunar1 ghst must have been frustrating. It’s going from intervention to intervention that I’d like to avoid!

@Cinnabomb yes another and more risk now with increased age. I don’t think the hospital I was under last time would have offered the prostin in my circumstances. They wanted continuous monitoring…

No I was high risk due to my daughter being so small but at our hospital they don't break your waters until there's space on the delivery suite or birth centre.

@20viona Ah I see. Good luck for September!
