hi. my dear friend had a section at 35 weeks today ( due to risk of pre eclampsia)i think they are both ok, but baby needed 'a little help', and is in baby unit.

i am used to my dds who weighed 10 lb and 9lb, so havent a clue about tiny newborns.

is this a healthy weight for a baby of 35 weeks? am concernedabout my friend and her baby.

it sounds quite good, my friend had a baby full term and he was about that weight, he is absolutley fine.

you sound very caring for your friend

noonar · 15/12/2007 18:44

thanks scorpio, it just sounds so tiny to me. thats good to hear.

I was 5lb at full term with no problems whatsoever. I think this can be considered a 'good' weight for that gestation.

How lovely, a Christmas baby. Best wishes to your friend.

no, I was 4lb and that was 40+ years ago before the recent advances in neonatal care.

DaphneHarvey · 15/12/2007 19:04

Yes 4lb 4oz is a good weight for a baby born at 35 weeks. It is not surprising he needs "a little help" I am sure he will be fine, they will take great care of him.

My DD was born 9lb 2oz and she needed "a little help" too. She looked so vast in that baby unit compared to tots less than a third her size.

I was 5lb at birth 37 weeks. No probs for me either.

Congrats to your friend. Babies half her baby's weight go on to do well ...

sounds about right my ds was 5 pond 3 onces born at almost 37 weeks.he is 2 and 3 months and taller than all the 2 and a half year olds in his toddler groups he is as fit as a flee never had any problems

amytheearwaxbanisher · 15/12/2007 19:16

pound even

Brandnewchristmaspyjamasgirl · 15/12/2007 19:18

My dd was 3 weeks early and 4lb 4oz she was fine stayed in two days to have her blood sugars monitered but all was good.

She is now a little small for her age but apart from that a happy healthy 8 year old

Wheelybahhumbug · 15/12/2007 19:23

dd was 4 lbs 9 oz at 37 weeks and just needed monitoring and a bit of heating for blood sugars. I would think the 35 weeks is more of an issue than the weight but 35 weeks is still fine. I think she'll be just fine.

PortAndLemonaid · 15/12/2007 19:28

They put on roughly half a pound a week in late pregnancy, so 4lb 4oz at 35 weeks suggests a baby heading for just under 7lb a full-term, which is a perfectly respectable size (although, like you, I had a 10lb 5.5oz baby so anything under 8lb always sounds tiny to me).

random · 15/12/2007 19:31

my dd1 was 4Lb 10 born at 35 weeks ..now a big healthy 28 year old ..never took her long to catch up when she was a baby

noonar · 15/12/2007 19:32

thanks everyone, that puts it in context for
me

worrying to me as ds's were 9lb9 and 10lb12.

LadyOfTheHollyAndTheIvy · 15/12/2007 19:38

in the same boat as you then noonar.
when mine were born the caregivers were like he is HUGE and i thought they were tiny babies.
also, ds1 has really vad jaundice and they said they wouldnt admit him to the scbu as i would have an awful time with funny looks and questions with him being 9lb among the tiny babies.
instead we were put in a private room.

Anarchymummy · 17/12/2007 15:23

Sounds about right,I was born at 34 weeks in similar circumstances and weighed 3lb10.
lol not like my daughter who the m/w thinks will be about 7lb+(which sounds big to me as both me and my brother were both prem and tiny!)

stockingfiller · 17/12/2007 15:29

my friend has just had baby boiirn 41 weeks it her dd stopped growing at 35weeks ahe was born 5lb5oz

MsPontipine · 31/12/2007 15:47

Hiya - my ds was 4lb 1 + half ounces when born just 1 week early. No problems at all - just a little help regarding his blood sugars too. He is now 5 and he is lovely and tall and strong, doing excellently at school and is the healthiest child I know!!

whomovedmychocolate · 01/01/2008 21:16

My brother was 3lbs 4oz at three weeks overdue - IUGR apparently. He's fine now though - oh and 40 so think how much fetal medicine has moved on since that point.

my twins were 4lb 2 and 4lb 6 born at 35 weeks and had no real problems other than jaundice and trouble with weight gain initially, no scbu needed. Both very happy and healthy at just turned 4 yo now
