Did your second baby arrive earlier or later than your first?

My first was born at 40+4 - spontaneous vaginal birth, 2 hours 43 minutes - lovely jubbly.

I'm due my second on 9th December and trying to figure out when my partner should book time off from, he has 10 days holiday left for the year (paternity is not a viable option).

I don't want him to book it from the due date and then I end up still being pregnant at 40+11... It's something you obviously can't plan with spontaneous labour, but I'm trying to navigate it somehow so he's actually there for the birth and at least the first few days.

Back to the question in subject, did your second arrive earlier or later?

Three weeks earlier. But that's because I was induced three weeks earlier :)

I recall reading some research when my first was due that said that the average first baby was born at 40+5, the average second at 40+3.

nomorespaghetti · 13/09/2021 12:30

First was 4 days late, second was a week early! Good luck Flowers

PlanDeRaccordement · 13/09/2021 12:33

First was 10days late, second only 7 days late.

Strokethefurrywall · 13/09/2021 12:51

First was 37+5, the second was 38+2. The extra few days were torture as he’d been threatening to come since 30 weeks.
Fully expected to come off the tablets I was taking to stop wary labor and have him the next day, but nope.

WoMandalorian · 13/09/2021 13:04

My second was later. First was 8 days late and second was 12 days late. Is there no way for him to talk to his work about this so he can start his holiday when you go into labour?
My DH also didn't get paternity with our first or second, but he spoke to his work and they agreed to 2 weeks holiday starting whenever was necessary.

BettySweaty · 13/09/2021 13:34

cricketmum84 · 13/09/2021 14:35

Earlier. First was 42 weeks and second was on her due date! (Only just though... 5 to midnight!)

SlamLikeAGuitar · 13/09/2021 14:48

Earlier.
I was induced at 38+1 with DC1.
DC2 arrived spontaneously at 36+0.
DC3 arrived spontaneously at 40+0.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 13/09/2021 14:49

The same. Both 2 weeks early.

MrsFin · 13/09/2021 14:53

Earlier. She was 2 weeks early. Eldest was 2 weeks late.

TuesdayRuby · 13/09/2021 14:56

First was 39+4
Second was 40+1

I was horrified to still be in labour at 40 weeks! I was adamant no2 would be another early one. I distinctly remember stomping around telling anyone who would listen that “this baby will NEVER come!” (Bit dramatic in hindsight) Grin

Btw OP. With a first birth at less than three hours, I would prepare for a very speedy second delivery…

steelseries · 13/09/2021 14:56

Both 6 days late. Went into labour at almost the exact same time and each was born about 6 hours later.

1st 39 + 3
2nd 39 + 5

Both inductions due to risks and large measurements.
