Hi, did anyone had a 10lb or bigger baby? Which was your experiences, which method you've used and how bad or good was it, any complications? I was due to give birth yesterday, today I had a scan, my baby weights 10lb, they offered induction before but I refused, they offered csection I refusef, tommorrow I am having membrane sweep at home with a hope that it will trigger labour, had some period kindlike pains but nothing major.please help thanks Bear

My first was 10lb 5oz, second was 10lb 2oz.

No pain relief, no complications, natural births with both (laboured in the pool, delivered second in the pool).

EchoLimaYankee · 26/04/2021 20:22

I had a 9lb one and that was bad enough. Third degree tear and pelvic floor damage.

I’d take the c-section in your situation. Honestly, if I ever have another I will be asking for a section.

Talipesmum · 26/04/2021 20:25

Hello, my second was 11lb, I didn’t know he was going to be so massive (and I think that helped!). Birthing pool, gas and air and he came out way easier than my first (8.5 lb ish, back to back I think, forceps and episiotomy etc).

Ohnomoreno · 26/04/2021 20:26

I'd take a section tbh.

PinkCookie11 · 26/04/2021 20:26

I understand you refusing help etc but if it was me I’d have opted for the section.
Whilst some births with big babies don’t go wrong, others can go very wrong and I’d want to ensure my baby was out safely.

HelpMeh · 26/04/2021 20:28

I haven't given birth but I think I'd definitely be considering that c section... I imagine water birth might help with the inevitable ring of fire but not sure if pools are available last minute.

Were you diligent with your perineal massage?

Floralnomad · 26/04/2021 20:29

My first was 10lb 4 oz , terrible delivery loads of stitches , PPH , blood transfusion . I opted for a section with the second which was much better , and I was out of hospital quicker , if I had my time again I’d have 2 sections . Good luck whatever you decide .

10lb 1oz a week and a half early, elective c-section due to his size.

hiredandsqueak · 26/04/2021 20:31

My son's partner was told her baby was over ten pound and and agreed to induction last Sunday. She had a sweep before induction was started as ward was busy and dgs was born four hours later with just gas and air. He weighed 8lb 6oz so quite a bit smaller than the ten pound plus they predicted from a scan just two days previously.

WildCherryBlossom · 26/04/2021 20:31

My biggest baby was 10lb 11oz. It was unexpected, hadn't measured particularly big. I managed fine with just gas and air.

Try not to be too worried. The measurements are often wrong and from my experience size isn't really so much of a factor when it comes to giving birth.

HowCanYou · 26/04/2021 20:35

My 2nd was 10lb 8oz. Labour was 4 hours, I used gas and air and had a second degree tear but it was fine. I can understand why you are worried though, it can feel scary! Hope all goes well

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 26/04/2021 20:35

Same as @Floralnomad except mine was 11lb 2. My 2nd 3rd and 4th were all early although ds4 was an elective csection which was much better than large ds1s birth

inmyslippers · 26/04/2021 20:35

I'd take a section no medals in child birth methods

mamamalt · 26/04/2021 20:36

Measurements from those scans are more than likely not accurate.
However both my babies were 9.7 and 9.9 and caused no problems. Second born with no pain relief and just a graze. Your body can birth your baby, but you have to feel comfortable with it so do what will make you most relaxed.

WitchDancer · 26/04/2021 20:37

I was told my youngest was over 10lb at a scan. I had him the next day weighing 8lb 2oz. They're not always accurate!

Grumpycatsmum · 26/04/2021 20:38

Both over 10lb. First 10lb 40z. Second 10lb 1 Oz. Tried labour with the first one after being induced having had sizing scan. Ended up having emergency section after about 12 hours. Not great experience as had bad reaction to anaesthetic. But we were both fine. Second one was elective c section.
Suggest you talk to doctor. Really depends on how small you are as well as size of baby. And your own mother's birth weight seems a factor. My mum was 12lb and that seemed to persuade doctor I really should have a section!

Tillyscoutsmum · 26/04/2021 20:39

Ds was 10lb 5oz gas and air. Stayed upright as much as possible. Gave birth on a birthing stool (definitely recommend!!). Looooong, slow labour (57 hours) due to him being back to back and waters not breaking but once he turned around and my waters were broken, he was out in less than 20 minutes (3 pushes). I did tear a bit and needed a few stitches but no major problems

Milkywaysky · 26/04/2021 20:39

Scans are notoriously inaccurate.

My second was 10lb 11, five days overdue. Born quickly after a quick labour less than 2 hrs from my being in bed to being born. Gas and air. First was 8lb 3 (two weeks early) and a more normal length labour, also gas and air.

Had a few stitches after second baby for a minor tear, no issues really. Waters broke spontaneously while I was in bed (same as first baby) though I had had a sweep the day before I think. Went on to have two more babies, both good sizes but not as big as the second - third was born on due date and fourth was three weeks early. They broke my waters with third as I had some bleeding (following a sweep). Fourth waters broke in bed 37 weeks exactly.

I had them all privately and so was scanned multiple times with each baby - they all measured around 50th centile towards the end, including the whopper!

I would take the sweeps for sure, get walking up and down the stairs etc. Are you in the UK?

FontyMcFontface · 26/04/2021 20:40

I had two, 10lb 4 and 10lb 6.

Both straightforward, one was born at home.

Growth scans can be very inaccurate. Even if your baby is big, there are things that can be done to make the birth easier, positions you can adopt to open the pelvis etc and give baby more room. I’d recommend a look at homebirth.org even planning a hospital birth.

SavingsQuestions · 26/04/2021 20:40

9 10 and 9 14 and neither wanted to come out by themselves. I went over 2 weeks/had wanted a home birth.

I had complications with both and would take a planned c section with open arms over induction if I had my time again.

Milkywaysky · 26/04/2021 20:43

Yes to birth positions as suggested above - I gave birth to my big one standing up, leaning over the bed.

Pbbananabagel · 26/04/2021 20:44

3 days of induction and he wouldn’t come out, ended up with an emergency c section, he was maaaaassive and bang on the measurements they gave from scan.
Currently pg with no. 2 and planning an elective section as this one is going big too.
No regrets. None.

ColintheCrow · 26/04/2021 20:45

10lb 7, not expected, induced at 40 weeks due to medical history. Just a graze. Took him shopping two days after and have very lovely photos of him with my ward neighbour who had a 5lb baby.

Your body wouldn't make a baby you couldn't birth, it's illogical. Please ignore some of the childish and ignorant comments on here about a c-section.

Also those scans can be out by up to a pound so it might actually not even be correct.

I recommend watching some positive birth videos and reading some positive birth stories. You will be absolutely fine x

Blindstupid · 26/04/2021 20:49

Not personally, but 2 people I know had 10lb+ ..... both were fine, 1 especially found the delivery easy. SIL had 9lb 8oz .. baby was long and slim.

They said my baby would be 9-10lb .... 7lb 1oz I had!
