Hi, did anyone had a 10lb or bigger baby? Which was your experiences, which method you've used and how bad or good was it, any complications? I was due to give birth yesterday, today I had a scan, my baby weights 10lb, they offered induction before but I refused, they offered csection I refusef, tommorrow I am having membrane sweep at home with a hope that it will trigger labour, had some period kindlike pains but nothing major.please help thanks Bear

My 10lb 8oz DS was a much easier birth than his 7lb 13oz big sister - tore with her but not him. Had a water birth with g&a and he was out after 4 hours of labour and about 3 pushes!

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 26/04/2021 20:54

Your body wouldn't make a baby you couldn't birth, it's illogical. Please ignore some of the childish and ignorant comments on here about a c-section.

Eh, not true at all!!

My second was 9lbs 15oz. No pain relief, out on 5 hours beginning to end, few stitches. Second was 10lbs 6oz. She got stuck, was pusher her out for 2 hours, again no pain relief. I've now got some pelvic floor damage (minor prolapse), bit no major trauma.

catsandsprogs · 26/04/2021 20:57

Raerae why are the c section comments childish and ignorant? Some of these are based on women's experiences.

How can you say the OP will be fine by watching a few videos?!?

For what it's worth I gave birth to my middle baby naturally (was over 9lb) got into difficulties and would not go through that again. My third was a large baby too, had elective c section, and whilst the recovery was much harder vs. A natural birth, the birth experience itself was amazing, I was just glad she was out safely and if I had another, would definitely go for that.

TheMoth · 26/04/2021 20:57

2x 9lbers. Little tear with one and graze with another. 6 hours followed by 2 hours. Friend had a 6lber and 3rd degree tears. I think part is just luck.

DareDevil223 · 26/04/2021 21:00

I had an 11lb baby (he's now in his 20s and 6ft 3). Waters broke before I went into hospital. I had gas and air, used Tens and had pethidine. I had an episiotomy as they worried that a tear would be bad but no epidural or section.

He was a long baby which might have made it easier but it was bloody hard work! I didn't have any lasting effects from the birth no pelvic floor or other damage.

We were the stars of the maternity hospital which was quite fun Grin

Blossomandbee · 26/04/2021 21:02

I agree scans aren't accurate. Also size doesn't mean problems or more pain, there are other factors such as position of the baby and size of your pelvis.
My biggest was 10lbs, it was my easiest labour, no stitches and felt great afterwards.

Floralnomad · 26/04/2021 21:07

@RaeRaeMama , if you care to watch videos and think positive thoughts then that’s your business , our first baby nearly died during the birth , purely due to his size in relation to mine , he spent time in SCBU and I was seriously ill . That makes me entitled to my opinion about c sections .

barnaby100 · 26/04/2021 21:08

You must go for a c section

11lb baby born 23 years ago. Now have had 2 lots of prolapse surgery, need a hysterectomy, lost bladder control

Multiple gynaecologists have linked it to the birth,

It is the greatest regret of my life that I didn't have a c section.

20viona · 26/04/2021 21:09

I'd take the section. My Daughter was only 5lb and I had episiotomy and second degree tear!

Workinghardeveryday · 26/04/2021 21:19

My first was 8lb but I am very petite so big baby for me.
No one gets a medal for pushing. I had section for my second pregnancy, I was planning natural birth and ended up having emergency section.
If I could pick again I would have section!

damekindness · 26/04/2021 21:21

3 babies 30 odd years ago all heavy and last one 11lb 5oz (I am and was a size 12) ended up with shoulder dystopia during delivery and a bit of a panic for the midwife but no damage at the time.

All was well up till the menopause and right after that my pelvic floor quickly disintegrated and maintaining continence is erm...an ongoing challenge! I would have chosen a CS if I'd known

Big babies run in the family - my dad was apparently 13lb at birth. Normal delivery! He was an only child

Good luck ( best pack away those newborn clothes thoughSmile)

Survivingmy3yearold · 26/04/2021 21:22

The scans can be very inaccurate and nice guidelines state that size is not a reason for induction or c section. These are the guidelines that your healthcare professionals should be using. Anything they suggest should be merely that, a suggestion. If you're happy with their offer then go for it but make sure you're fully informed. Induction is a major process and is effectively forcing your body to do something it's not ready to do and can be very traumatic and has higher chances of leading onto further interventions. I would look into this before making your decision, you don't have to decide then and there.
www.nice.org.uk/donotdo/in-the-absence-of-any-other-indications-induction-of-labour-should-not-be-carried-out-simply-because-a-healthcare-professional-suspects-a-baby-is-large-for-gestational-age-macrosomic

Eviethyme · 26/04/2021 21:28

mine was 9lb 8 and second was 9lb 7 and i didnt feel a thing with diarmorphine and didnt tear with either. i actually thought Labour was a breeze both out with induction and both comfortable labours

Candycane57 · 26/04/2021 21:28

10lb dd- my first baby. TENS machine was a dream on my back and hips, lots of hippy breathing techniques and gas and air. Breathe through the pains and try not to panic, think of the pain as power. My midwife told me how your muscles need oxygen to work well, so when you're trying to push out a baby you need to be deep breathing to send plenty of oxygen to your muscles to help them contract.

Expect the unexpected, don't think of pain relief as failing or a weak choice. Accept any help and advice, and trust your team entirely. Also, you're allowed to get grumpy, snappy, emotional, tired, etc. Everything that happens is entirely your choice, so if you feel c section is best, go for it, if you are adamant you don't want one, tell them. Bring distractions like a tablet to watch films on or a phone to play games on.

Best of luck, OP x

1st 9lb 4, 2nd 9lb 6 and 3rd 10lb 1, Had an epidural for the last one and was absolutely fine... a large baby doesn't have to automatically mean a Caesarean section... 😊x

Blindstupid · 26/04/2021 21:52

raerae ... what a stupid comment! 🙄

Mammymar · 26/04/2021 21:52

DD1 was 10lbs 14oz. I was told she was going to be no more than 8lbs. Got induced at 10 days overdue. Didn't progress even with oxytocin and then she got into distress. I needed an emergency c section and she wasn't breathing when she came out as cord was around her neck. It was not a nice experience at all. Planned
C sections on my other two children which was a better experience. My other two children both weighed over 10lb too.

seepingweeping · 26/04/2021 22:14

My baby was 11lb 4 and she was early.

I had a cesarean and they had to use forceps to scoop her around to get her out because she was so big (I'm quite small)

I have some pelvic damage from having such a large baby, I pee if I need the bathroom and lean forward, my stomach isn't flat but I don't mind that.

Trust me, have the cesarean.

Also, they said ds would be over 10lbs - had so many growth scans "confirming" his weight and he was just over 6lbs. With Dd they told me around 8lbs (scanned at 37 weeks) and she was just over 11lbs.

steppemum · 26/04/2021 22:20
  1. the size they give you is so inaccurate, that your baby might be 8lbs.
  2. a lot depends on how big you are

I am tall with big hips.
ds was 10lbs 1 oz. Long labour, back to back, had to be induced and ended up with epidural. The issue wasn't his size exactly, it was that he had the biggest head you have ever seen on a newborn
dd1 was 8lbs 7 oz all natural birth
dd2 was10 lbs 7oz and all natural birth, over in 90 minutes, not even gas and air!

There is no way I would opt for a C-section on the basis of a size scan, they are just too wrong.

surreygirl1987 · 26/04/2021 22:22

Please ignore @raeraemama. Sje is talking not only nonsense, but dangerous nonsense.

The truth is, you just don't know until it's done. All your options have risks - everything is a gamble. My first was 9lb10. His head was simply enormous and he had to be yanked out by venture which injured his neck and gave him 2 years in physio (thankfully fine now!). I was concerned when my second baby was measuring even bigger and was considering a c section. Then at 39+4 they realised he was breech anyway, which was the decising factor for me. C section was amazing (though initial recovery was even more brutal than first birth episiotomy). If I have a third (I won't!) I'd go for a c section for a giant baby. But I was warned of risks of that too of course. There is no right answer. But please don't feel pressured by people who say it will be fine. Yes it might be. But it might not. Best of luck. You'll be so proud when it's all over!

Keha · 26/04/2021 22:31

My first baby was 10lb plus (didn't know it), needed an episotomy and ventouse but no lasting damage and my experience didn't seem much different to my friends with smaller babies.

AreyouthereGoditsme · 26/04/2021 22:34

Way over 10lb here and I'm tiny. I was induced as she was considerably overdue. I had a natural delivery with diamorphine and we were both fine. Good luck Flowers

Hyacinth88 · 26/04/2021 22:38

I was told to expect a 10lb + baby she was 7lb 2oz

BigGreen · 26/04/2021 22:40

My baby came early but was still over 9lbs I have pelvic floor issues now following a very quick labour. In your shoes I'd take the c section due to the risks of shoulder dystopia and tearing.

PleaseReferToMeAsBritneySpears · 26/04/2021 22:43

My second was over 11lbs. 22 hour labour before emergency section. I won't go in to all the gory details but if you're offered a section , take it. Better by far than an emergency one. A planned section would be much safer for both if you. Good luck!
