I had a Caesarean section, how long do I actually have to wait until I have the next baby?

Hello all

I had my Caesarean section 13 months ago and I think ... well I don't know for sure but there's a chance I maybe preggo's again and I'm terrified.

When I left the hospital the midwives told me a minimum of 18 months to let the scar heal egg.
I went to doctors in Nov 2020 and the senior nurse told as baby is 12.months it's fine to try now then I went to doctors in Dec 2020 and the doctor told me I should wait 18 months or long as it's a risk for me and baby and the scar could burst from the inside and both me and the baby could die.

But I want to know when the actual time frame is
I am freaking out incase I am and it's too early

I believe 18 months is the standard recommendation but many women have another child before that time period and have no trouble. I think it's mainly to let the wound heal fully, bear in mind you have around 7 layers that they cut through so even once your stitches are out and it looks healed, the layers underneath may still be weak and could potentially cause issues with stretching again in a further pregnancy, although I'm not 100% sure and I'm not a medical professional. I had an emergency C-section with my son, he turned 2 in October and I'm pregnant with my 2nd now.

I was pregnant again 7 months after my c section and they had ballsed up the stitching so I still wasn’t fully healed. It was fine and I felt ok but at no point did anyone advise me not to get pregnant within a certain time frame.

I had babies 20 months apart so was pregnant around the same time as you are now I think. I was told 18 months but she did say not to worry too much if it does happen earlier. I have a friend who had a 3rd baby exactly 1 year 1 day after her 2nd c section, baby delivered by c section no issues.

But as pp said please talk to your consultant as everyone is different!

Even the internets advice is speak to a doctor.

Around 17 months between my last 2 sections (actual date of op). Slight infection on second but think that was more me overdoing it.

A friend gave birth to an unexpected second baby within a year of her first, both by c-section, and she was fine. However she may have healed well, been lucky etc. So there's no hard and fast rule, but you do need to talk to a medical professional to get a better understanding of what this may mean for you.

I don't know what the official advice is but I had two sections 17 months apart with no problems.

Hey Nancy I saw that it says bare minimum is 6 months but 12 months is better n 18 is even better

I have spoken to at least 3 different doctors as in my surgery you don't have 1 assigned doctor any more it's whoever is available that day which I thought was good but they have me different answers that's why I'm worried

I was told 2 years when I had mine.

My friend had two c sections 13months apart. Don’t panic!

Congratulations that's a good time to leave I feel and mine was same situation as your with my first

I think it's also because I'm not sure if i want another baby as I don't feel like I'm a good mum and also covid isn't helping too

The last doctor I spoke to told me I could die ( her exact words were "we could loose you & baby") if I have the baby now as the stitches could rip open which would also harm the baby so have that playing on my mind too

I just am worried as the last doctor didn't help and advise I should wait as "we could loose you & baby" which freaks me out ... A lot
I hope I'm not but I have to wait a while before I know for sure

I will go back to the doctor n see if they can help

I was one of those unlucky ones...

Mine were 25 months apart, both induced at two weeks over due date, and I had to have a second emergency section as I started going into shock. It turned out that my previous scar was coming apart from the inside out. I was very lucky to make it, although wouldn't have had to go through it at all if the consultant had let me have the elective section I'd begged for.

I do have very narrow hips, though, no way my babies were coming out the normal way. I was told not to even consider a third baby, ever.

I've had 3 sections, each were almost exactly 2 years apart. No problems at all.
